About Matta
Matta is creating industrial AI for factories. We are a group of engineers, scientists, and company builders developing manufacturing foundation models (MFMs) and a general-purpose manufacturing OS to improve the sustainability of manufacturing today and to unlock the unimaginable technologies of tomorrow.
What we actually do:
- Build insane AI models that understand the physics of manufacturing processes (think futuristic shit like machines that watch and correct themselves on the fly whilst making a part or even learn how to make things out of new materials by themselves).
- Research new foundational models for manufacturing enabling users to install vision-based inspection and quality control AIs in less than 24 hours! (for context the industry standard is about 6 months).
- Think really hard about how manufacturing will look in 10+ years and build a brand-new intuitive OS and interfaces for orchestrating factories, monitoring machines, controlling production, etc. all with AI.

Backend engineer @ Matta
We’re looking for a Backend Engineer to help design, build, and scale our manufacturing OS. You’ll work directly on our FastAPI-based backend with the super hard task of designing highly-scalable system architectures to handles 1000s of real-time data streams across 100s of manufacturing processes. What makes this especially challenging is generalising across different use cases and customer environments. We need to be super flexible without compromising on performance and code sanity - from beer bottle factories to aerospace components. You’ll juggle back and forth between: 1) creating API endpoints for our edge devices, 2) improving the efficiency of database queries, 3) integrating new features in our frontend dashboard 4) plus more.
This isn’t your typical dev gig—expect to work hard and collaborate with an exceptional team of top engineers, scientists, and builders, all obsessed with embodied AI reshaping the manufacturing world.
About you
- A backend behemoth: You write clean, scalable, high-performance backend code. You take pride in your craft.
- Bonus points for familiarity or mastery with our tech stack: FastAPI and pydantic, postgres, sqlalchemy, etc.
- All the usual add-ons like Redis, Celery, New Relic, Sentry; and deploying to production with good CI/CD/testing/logging practices.
- You’ve led projects from start to finish, overcoming hurdles and shipping brilliant products (in startups? even better) and you are a bit batty and want to push yourself more!
- People person: you love dynamic teams, sharing knowledge, mentoring/teaching others, and embracing feedback (plus you join our big Lego building sessions)
- You are hyper adaptable – ship fast, learn faster and are unfazed by a little chaos.
Above all, we are looking to build a team of creative, outside-of-the-box thinking problem solvers. For this, candidates should be:
- Capable of setting and reaching ambitious goals, and taking a project from concept to completion.
- Self-directed, self-organised, proactive, and comfortable in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary work environment.
- Team players with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Enthusiastic tea or coffee drinkers who enjoy a good biscuit or two and a good slice of cake (this is the most important criteria).
