Job Description
We're looking for an experienced and curious Senior GenAI Engineer to join our growing Generative AI Center of Excellence (CoE). You'll be the most senior hands-on engineer on the team, playing a critical role in shaping how we build, integrate, and scale GenAI capabilities across our tools and workflows.
This is a high-impact, high-autonomy role for someone who has already delivered GenAI-powered systems in production, is comfortable exploring the LLM ecosystem, and enjoys mentoring a team of smart, energetic engineers who are early in their GenAI journey.
Role
- Design, build, and productionize GenAI-powered tools and features using APIs like OpenAI, Claude, etc.
- Help shape our architecture, prompt engineering strategies, and evaluation frameworks
- Guide the team on when to use RAG vs. fine-tuning vs. function calling, etc.
- Prototype quickly, validate ideas, and help turn the best ones into durable solutions
- Use TDD (Test Driven Development) to ship code that is maintainable and which stay bug free
- Work closely with product, engineering, and data stakeholders to ship real value
- Mentor junior engineers, review code, and lead by example — technical guidance, not bureaucracy
- Stay on top of GenAI trends, tools, benchmarks, and bring clarity on what’s real vs. hype
Responsibilities
- Have 6–8+ years of engineering experience, ideally across multiple companies or industries
- Have shipped GenAI-powered features into production (not just toy projects)
- Have strong programming and problem-solving skills
- Are fluent in Python and comfortable integrating APIs, building backends, or working with embeddings
- Have strong product thinking — you care about solving user problems, not just building cool tech
- Can communicate clearly across disciplines — from junior devs to product managers
- Are comfortable working in ambiguous, fast-moving environments
- You've used dev tools like Cursor, Replit, or other AI coding assistants
- Have a learning mindset and are excited to work with folks earlier in their GenAI journey
Good to have
- Experience with LangChain, LlamaIndex, RAG pipelines, or similar
- Familiar with prompt engineering, model evaluation, or LLM observability
- Have experimented with function calling, agents, or tool use
- Have experience with internal tool development, scripting, or automation
- Active side projects, blog posts, or OSS contributions in GenAI

Our story
OakNorth Bank was built on the foundations of frustrations with old-school banking. In 2005, when our founders tried to get capital for their data analytics company, the computer said ‘no’. Unfortunately, all major banks in the UK were using the same computer – and it was broken.
