NOTE: The University of California Regents are considering implementing pay reductions, furloughs and/or other types of measures due to the state budget crisis. This position would be subject to any cost cutting measures implemented at UCSF.

The UCSF Capital Programs & Facilities Management Department designs, builds, operates and maintains UCSF facilities in support of its research, teaching, health care and community service missions; the department employs over 300 professional staff, and spends $78 million annually in operating funds and more than $200 million annually in capital funds; the Environmental Sustainability Manager will have responsibility for coordinating all UCSF initiatives related to sustainability in accordance with the CACS mission and vision, and to update initiatives to keep current with institutional capacity and developing technologies; the incumbent will provide support to CACS, and ensure that the Sustainability Steering Committee and its work groups are coordinated and working in concert with UCSF Sustainability policy; oversees the development of the UCSF Sustainability Assessment and the development and update of the UCSF Sustainability Plan; finally, the Sustainability manager will provide content management and coordination for UCSF’s Sustainability website; and perform other duties assigned.

Requirements

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Studies or related with environmental focus; minimum of seven years experience implementing environmental or sustainability programs, resource management, environmental initiatives, or equivalent; experience with energy, water, and waste conversation in buildings; student sustainability initiatives and the linkage between university educational mission, research, and institutional change; organizational analysis, strategies, and prefer experience in a complex, progressive, decentralized organization; demonstrated experience in budget planning and prioritization of projects, programs and activities, using sound judgment while meeting organizational requirements; proven strong results-orientation skills, and a track record for continually measuring results of implemented programs; shown ability to work independently and with and through others to achieve required results; exceptional technical and interpersonal skills; emphasis on training and public presentation skills, with ability to address a very broad range of audiences; present an advanced ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with all levels of faculty, staff, students, and external community; advanced report writing, reading, and comprehension skills applicable to technical documents, proposals, and grant applications; excellent computer applications skills and techniques; working knowledge of all aspects of Microsoft Office, desktop computing, and web-based training, information dissemination, and interactive services; advanced knowledge of environmental management policies, issues, and initiatives; leadership ability to inspire confidence and to motivate and persuade diverse groups to collaborate collectively, in order to meet common objectives; demonstrated ability to use creativity and innovative thinking and bold leadership to accomplish through others; problem-solving ability to think analytically and focus on the details of issues, without losing sight of the big picture, in order to arrive at strategic solutions; ability to work independently, to be a team leader and to work as a team member, incorporating past management and team building experience; demonstrated ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks, and to work with shifting priorities and schedules.

NOTE: Incumbent must successfully pass a background check through the Department of Justice.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: University and or Medical Center experience; Master of Science in a related field; LEED accreditation; specific experience in the areas of sustainability policies, sustainable food systems, healthy living programs, conservation energy, waste- and or water-management; understanding of environmental best practices in universities or health care environments.
