About Adaptimmune

Adaptimmune, a leader in T-cell therapy, is a multinational, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing novel immunotherapies using its proprietary SPEAR T-cell receptor platform to treat solid tumors, which has the potential to transform the treatment of cancer.

Job Description

Reporting to Group Leader, the postholder will design and conduct scientific experiments to screen and characterise T cells expressing novel T cell receptors (TCRs). The aim is to test and select candidate TCRs that activate T cells against tumour cell lines and primary tumour, without recognising normal cells and tissues. Ultimately this work will help to select optimal candidate TCRs for full preclinical safety evaluation and hopefully selection for new clinical trials for cell therapies to treat cancer.

The Scientist will be expected to plan and carry out experiments with minimal supervision, but may still require scientific guidance from Senior Scientists and the Group Leader. The postholder will require some prior experience of cell biology and cell culture techniques such as lentivirus generation, T cell isolation and culture, and functional assays such as ELISPOT, ELISA and cytotoxicity assays. The postholder will develop further scientific skills to be able to work more independently on routine experiments, and will also be responsible for the interpretation of scientific results under the supervision of Senior Scientists and the Group Leader.

• Design and conduct experiments to ensure robust and meaningful data generation.
• In collaboration with the Senior Scientists and Group Leader analyse, summarise, and record experimental results, and maintain relevant databases and records.
• Participate in group and project meetings and discussions.
• Contribute to routine lab maintenance

• Undergraduate degree in Life sciences, or related discipline.
• Relevant experience of cell biology and laboratory procedures.
• Ability to work independently, after training, on routine experiments.
• Ability to learn and develop in order to work independently on more complex experiments within a reasonable time frame.

• An understanding of TCR biology as it relates to cell therapy.
• Relevant post-graduate experience, possibly including an MSc or PhD in a relevant scientific area.

• Computer literate and able to familiarise with different IT systems.
• Excellent numeracy and English language skills (both written and verbal).
• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).
• Ability to follow protocols and work independently after training.
• Strong team player willing to help the group and department wherever required.
• Good attention to detail, time management skills and communication skills.
• Knowledge and skills to use standard laboratory equipment (such as pipettes, centrifuges, plate washers).
• Experience with cell culture including cell isolations, culturing multiple cell lines, cell transductions.
• Experience running cell-based assays such as ELISPOT and ELISA.

• Experience with lentivirus production.
• Knowledge and skills to use more specialist lab equipment (such as plate readers and basic flow cytometers).
