Job Description

We are looking for a Lead Platform Engineer to head up our Platform team in the Infrastructure tribe. You’ll be responsible for managing and scaling the system infrastructure that handles tens of millions of requests a day.

You’ll help to set the long-term strategy that will take our distributed compute platform to the next level - working out how to provide the best deployment experience for engineers, the greatest visibility into application and service performance and the best ways of raising issues at their source.

You’ll also be responsible for setting the standards for our DevOps chapter at Lyst - engaging with engineering to understand exactly what they need to achieve their objectives, and empowering the Platform engineers to help meet the needs of Lyst.

What will you be working on?

Deployment: orchestrating Terraform, Docker and CircleCI to deploy code to Empire, ECS and Kubernetes to run our applications, services and APIs
Scaling Lyst to a billion requests per month: utilising Cloudflare and AWS to run Lyst at a huge, distributed scale efficiently
Monitoring and alerting: measuring application performance and delivering insights, metrics and relevant alerts to the engineering teams with ELK, Grafana and New Relic
Collecting data: working with our Data Engineering team to ensure reliable delivery of data events through the data pipeline and using that to determine platform stability
Automation: managing as many systems as possible programmatically through automation to increase consistency and reduce hands-on events
Ownership: driving engineering teams to own their infrastructure and costs by building great tooling, visibility and documentation
Security: Setting the standards for fine-grained access to systems and applications to allow automated access control and support auditing requirements

How will you achieve this?

Autonomy: you’ll have the ability to determine what software, tooling and services we should use and why - the Lyst values encourage trust and a focus on impact
Strategy: you’ll work with the VP of Infrastructure and the Principal Architect for Infrastructure to determine the best strategy for running our operational systems
Management: you’ll empower the team of platform engineers to turn strategy requirements into projects as well as supporting day-to-day tasks, providing leadership and guidance
Mentoring: you’ll work with other operations-minded engineers around the business to encourage feedback and ideas in the form of a “DevOps” chapter, acting as a subject matter expert
Process: you’ll provide input on the best way to organise the team and drive documentation of our processes and responsibilities

Strong understanding of systems administration on Linux and experience of diagnosing issues and problem-solving
Great knowledge of running a distributed deployment architecture on AWS, particularly EC2, ECS, RDS and ElastiCache
Good knowledge of data stores and their management and optimisation, particularly PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch
Experience managing infrastructure-as-code with tools such as Chef and Terraform
Good Python and shell-scripting knowledge in order to work with our tooling pipelines
Proficient with Docker, Kubernetes, a CI/CD platform and container orchestration
Previous experience managing and coaching a proactive, autonomous team
Expertise in logging and monitoring at scale (S3, Graphite, Grafana, ElasticSearch and Kibana)
Knowledge of a DevOps toolchain to drive ownership of a self-hosted platform
Understanding of the role of CDNs in handling very large application load and request throughput
Competent in Git and the GitOps philosophy
Experience with project management using Jira and Confluence or similar tools

You get 29 days' time off throughout the year to take a well earned rest, in addition to the 8 public bank holidays
The Lyst Clothing Benefit. We're a fashion company so we'll give you £250 to spend on the site in Year 1, £500 in Year 2, £750 in Year 3 and £1000 from Year 4 onwards. You're going to look fantastic!
Private Healthcare by Vitality. Your health is important to us which is why we offer all employees a comprehensive healthcare scheme from the day that you start.
Conferences and events. We’re big on learning, so all Lysters are allocated an individual training & development budget of £1,000.
Enhanced family leave entitlements for both parents and carers
    Discounted eye tests and glasses
Team meet-ups, social events, sports and exercise events
    Cycle-to-work scheme
    Transport season ticket loans

Diversity and inclusion is an integral part of our culture. We recognise and celebrate the value and impact diversity brings to our company and are committed to ensuring this is a consistent focus, for which we are held to account. We are committed to treating all applicants fairly and equally, and encourage candidates from all backgrounds to apply for this role.
