We currently have an opening at our Foothill Ranch, CA (Orange County) facility for a Scientist – Modeling of SOL, Electrode and Divertor Physics. The candidate will perform theoretical and computational study of plasma physics associated with the boundary of fusion plasmas in the Computational Modeling group, with application to the Field Reversed Configuration. This is a full-time position with a rich compensation package.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and use theoretical and computational models to describe the plasma scrape off layer.
    • Focus areas will include interaction of plasma with atomic and molecular ions and neutrals, reflection from walls and recycling, establishment of plasma sheath and pre-sheath, plasma outflow to end plates, and effects of electrode biasing and rotation.
    • Algorithms may include particle-in-cell methods, Monte Carlo collisions, and electrostatic and hybrid field solvers.
  • Active interest in using models to interpret experimental results and to propose experiments to validate the predictions of theory. The models will be validated on the existing C-2W (aka Norman) experiment at C-2W and will play an important role in helping to design a next-step fusion device. 


Required Skills:

  • 2 to 5 years of experience in Computational or Theoretical Plasma physics or related field.
  • The ideal candidate will have experience in many or all of these areas:
    • Theoretical background in high beta plasma physics and/or open systems
    • MHD, Particle-In-Cell, or Vlasov Fokker-Planck modeling in magnetically confined plasmas.
    • High performance computing experience including MPI, OpenMP, or GPGPU computing
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and strong personal motivation are necessary.
    • The ability to work in a dynamic, team environment is required.


  • Project Experience:
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently on long term research projects.
    • Ability to organize and schedule work to meet deadlines.
    • Ability to work as lead on one project and to participate in and support other projects.


Other Preferred Experience:

  • Original work published in professional scientific journals.
  • Experience presenting at national and/or international level


Software Knowledge and Skills:

  • FORTRAN or C++
  • Python, IDL, or Matlab.

  • Preferred Education: Ph.D. in Computational or Theoretical Plasma physics or related field.
