Following multiple partnerships with many leading Pharmaceutical companies and research institutes, we are now seeking a highly motivated Knowledge Engineer to join our Oxford office.
 
In this role, you will be using your scientific expertise to directly contribute to our mission: making better drugs, faster - by working towards automation of the drug discovery process. We are applying state-of-the-art AI methods to address a diverse range of critical problems in drug discovery and are constantly innovating if required tools are not sufficient or do not exist. Our ambition is to draw knowledge and inspiration from adjacent scientific disciplines such as computer science, mathematics, or physics.
 
One of the key challenges we are working on is capturing and distilling expert knowledge in drug design. To address this and other problems we use methods such as natural language processing to extract domain knowledge from scientific literature, ontologies to structure our captured data, and goal-directed reasoning under uncertainty to drive automation.
 
You will have the opportunity to work in exciting, new areas of drug design as part of a talented and friendly team of research engineers with diverse scientific backgrounds. This role is a great fit for researchers that are passionate about knowledge engineering and equally keen on implementing methods that can and will be used to improve the drug discovery process.

What will you be doing in this role?

    • Work alongside our natural language processing team to build and maintain knowledge graphs of drug discovery concepts.
    • Collaborate with research scientists, medicinal chemists and computational drug designers to design and deploy terminologies, taxonomies, and ontology models to structure our captured data, and integrate domain knowledge from external sources.
    • Apply logical and statistical inference methods to our knowledge base to derive new data for downstream tasks.
    • Stay informed on the latest research in relevant scientific fields and analyze its potential impact on our capabilities.
    • Interact with the larger research community by attending conferences or workshops and writing high-impact publications.

What you will need

    • Masters or PhD focused on knowledge representation or automated reasoning. Or an undergraduate degree in one of these fields combined with comparable research experience from a professional career.
    • Familiarity with semantic technologies such as OWL, PR-OWL, SPARQL etc.
    • Ability to conduct novel research in a field of knowledge representation or automated reasoning.
    • Advanced proficiency in at least one programming language that is commonly used in scientific computing.
    • Desire to bring novel research as quickly as possible into a production environment to ultimately deliver therapeutics to patients faster!

Beneficial skills and experience

    • Knowledge of drug discovery and how AI methods can be applied to improve the process.
    • Familiarity with existing chemical information ontologies.
    • Knowledge of core machine learning principles, probabilistic inference/logic, Bayesian methods etc.
    • Hands-on experience with best software development practices and particularly in a collaborative environment.
    • Open source contributions or publications in academic journals demonstrating experience in using automated reasoning techniques to solve scientific problems.
