About Bench

Bench solves bookkeeping for entrepreneurs. But our larger purpose expands beyond that. We’re here to help entrepreneurs understand what they want to do and where they want to go.

Job Description

What’s Bench? Check us out in Fintech Impact, Perkins + Will, Daily Hive, BC Business, our Instagram, and our Blog.

We acknowledge that Bench headquarters is located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, including the territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and Səl̓ílwətaʔ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

Our mission is to make a profound difference in the quality of life of one million people, by removing the financial complexity of entrepreneurship. Businesses need to understand their financial performance, but for many smaller ones, this means a trade-off between doing their books and running their businesses.

Bench solves this dilemma by taking bookkeeping off of their hands. Learn more about us on our About page.

We’re growing fast, and we’re looking for you to join us on this incredible journey.

What makes this an exciting opportunity?

The People Team is one of the most critical functions of our business. We fuel Bench’s hyper-growth! We’re also serious about the development of our people and want Bench to be a place where you can catapult your career and make a real difference at the same time. This is where you come in. We’re looking for an experienced L&D leader, who will shape and deliver our company-wide learning and development program. We like to move fast and iterate, living our principle of Get Scrappy. You’ll likely work faster than you ever have before - it’s going to be incredibly fulfilling to watch the difference you’re making for our people happen right before your very eyes! You’re going to help us take Bench to the moon!

What you’ll be getting up to:

  • Using your deep expertise, creativity and innovative thinking to shape our L&D strategy.
  • Partnering with our executive team and senior leaders to assess and prioritize needs for learning and development across our business - areas like communication, leadership development, resiliency and so much more!
  • Ensuring that our training and development programs are developed through an anti-oppression lens, and align with our company-wide commitment to DEI.
  • Collaborating with our Operations and Sales training teams to seamlessly integrate learnings, opportunities and insights into a continuous improvement loop.
  • Creating and delivering training tailored to a remote environment (we’re all looking forward to the day when we can come together again in-person, and until then, remote is it).
  • Measuring the output of your efforts by constantly tracking the effectiveness of our learning and development programs - ensuring we are moving the learning and development needle in the ways we care about.

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to have:

  • Expertise transforming theory into action: You are an expert in creating behavior change. You design, facilitate and operate learning systems which empower people to acquire and transfer knowledge. You're experienced in creating learning programs, curriculum and course design.
  • A drive to make things better: You’re passionate about the growth of your teams! Nothing drives you more than the pursuit of making those around you better. You love to experiment, try new things, and drive improvement; within your own team, and across the organization.
  • Zoom-in, Zoom-out: You can take a big-picture perspective to identify and stay focused on what’s most important, then zoom-in on the details to execute seamlessly.
  • Intellectual curiosity: It’s not enough for you to know the what - you need to know the why! You are energized by challenging problems and are persistent/resourceful in your efforts to solve them.
  • Startup hustle: You are highly motivated, proactive, comfortable with change and ambiguity. You have a humble, team-player attitude and are ready to pitch in wherever you are needed most.
  • A well-developed equity lens: You actively engage in your pedagogical approach and curriculum development with an equity lens and an eye for inclusivity. You don’t just accept equitable practices, you model and advocate for them.

It could be an even better fit if you have:

  • L&D experience working in a rapidly growing and changing environment
  • Experience with the selection and implementation of an LMS
  • Background in instructional design

The extra details:

  • This is a full-time permanent position because we want to spend lots of time with your wonderful self!
  • This position offers an annual salary, stock options, and an extended benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision.
  • We are fully remote right now, so we’ll set you up with everything you need to work from home, from day one. Our intention is to be hybrid-remote once the pandemic is over.
  • We’re ideally looking for someone in the Lower Mainland of BC for this role.

We believe that unchecked biases disproportionately impact the most marginalized people in society—including but not limited to BIPOC, LGBTQ2S+ people, immigrants, and people with disabilities. We strongly encourage applications from people with these identities or other marginalized communities because we believe that without you, we are all less. At Bench, we don’t stand for tokenism. We stand for representation.
