onX is seeking a talented Senior Data Engineer to be responsible for the creation and maintenance of onX’s analytical ecosystem to enable discoverability and access to our data for the business.  You will be responsible for the testing, maintenance, construction, and development of the data ecosystem which consists of large-scale processing systems and databases.  This will entail the creation of data set processes for verification, acquisition, mining, and modeling of our data.


Missoula, MT; Bozeman, MT; or Remote from the USA only, with travel as needed. Additionally, being authorized to work in the U.S. is a precondition of employment. We do not sponsor work visas (of any kind ) for this position at this time.


(Essential Job Duties)

  • Work with the organization to provide data solution for each part of the organization

  • Contribute to existing data platforms and implement new technologies

  • Contribute and own onX’s user analytics data strategy

  • Develop a deep understanding of onX’s data and become a domain expert

  • Ensure data is distributed in a timely and accurate manner

  • Make data discoverable and accessible to business users


  • Five (5) or more years of data engineering experience
  • Strong background in relational databases such as MySQL and PostgreSQL
  • Proficient with data technologies (e.g. BigQuery, Dataflow, Apache Beam, PostgreSQL, etc.)
  • Understanding of data warehouse and data lake concepts
  • Background in working and providing data to reporting environments (Looker, Tableau, etc.)
  • Experienced with designing and developing ETL data pipelines both streaming and batching
  • Strong understanding of SQL and data modeling
  • Understanding of Linux, GCP (or other cloud platforms), Python, Docker, and Kubernetes
  • A proven understanding and application of computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and data modeling


  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or comparable field or equivalent experience
  • Experience working in Go Familiarity with Kubernetes
  • Experience with geospatial databases such as PostGIS, and spatial indexing
  • Experience with geospatial analysis tools such as Shapely and GDAL
  • Familiarity with QGIS
  • Experience working with a distributed team
  • Understanding of ETL SaaS tools, when to use them, and when to build your own
