Company Overview 

Fulcrum Therapeutics is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on improving the lives of patients with genetically defined rare diseases in areas of high unmet medical need. Fulcrum’s proprietary product engine identifies drug targets which can modulate gene expression to treat the known root cause of gene mis-expression. The company has advanced losmapimod to Phase 2 clinical development for the treatment of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). Fulcrum has also advanced FTX-6058, a small molecule designed to increase expression of fetal hemoglobin for the treatment of sickle cell disease and beta thalassemia into Phase 1 clinical development.


Seeking an experienced patent agent to join Fulcrum’s growing legal team. An exciting position that will provide an opportunity to help build and shape the rapidly  growing intellectual property portfolio.  Successful candidates should have demonstrable skills in evaluating and identifying new discoveries and leading the effort from initial filings on such discoveries to worldwide patent issuance. Candidates will preferably have a strong understanding of U.S. and foreign patent systems, including patent filing and prosecution processes, innovations review, patent searching, and landscape assessments. This role will report to the company’s SVP, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary. This position is available for part or full time work.


  • Work closely with the research and development teams to identify new inventions and draft, review, and prosecute patent applications covering such inventions
  • Provide intellectual property related advice
  • Manage, in a cost-efficient way, outside counsel with respect to patent prosecution and maintenance
  • Manage maintenance fee process and vendor, maintain patent docketing system
  • Contribute to development and evaluation of intellectual property strategy
  • Support Business Development in terms of in or out licensing opportunities
  • Conduct landscape and third-party portfolio assessments
  • As needed, work on other legal projects
  • Prefer candidates located or willing to relocate to the Boston area, remote candidates will be considered, occasional travel to Boston will be required


  • Bachelor’s degree in the life sciences (chemistry or biochemistry); advanced degree(s) desirable
  • A minimum of 4 years of IP experience in-house at a biotech or pharma company and/or at a law firm
  • Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office
  • Demonstrated ability to grasp scientific and technical concepts quickly
  • Ability to collaborate, work independently, and balance competing priorities with a high level of professionalism and with the ability to reprioritize quickly and handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills; ability to provide IP advice in a clear, concise manner, both verbally and in writing
