About Guideline

Guideline. Helping people save for a better future.

Guideline is the only 401(k) provider that doesn’t charge participants any fees on investments, regardless of the value of their assets or retirement account balance. And for employers, Guideline charges a low, flat rate fee per participant, in contrast to the asset-based fee model predominant in the industry.

Job Description

Guideline is looking for an exceptionally qualified project and release manager to join our fast growing R&D team.

We democratize retirement investment options, make them affordable to small and medium businesses. Our first commercial product – Guideline 401(k) – has been doing remarkably well in the marketplace. This gives us an opportunity to expand the functionality of the existing 401(k) offering as well as invest into new products.

Guideline is a technology company. Unlike the majority of the industry that relies on stacking different layers of services at a cost, we are a full-stack 401(k) provider. This means we own the end-to-end experience, increasing the value to our clients while reducing their cost.. Our software is used by our in-house operational teams as well as the customers: businesses and the individual investors.

What will you be working on?

This job is for you if you can demonstrate a strong track record in shipping commercial software products and are passionate about solving complex business challenges with technology. Experience in regulated industries is a must.

In this role, as an individual contributor, you will ensure that Guideline’s product management, design, software/data engineering, operational and customer support teams cross-operate seamlessly, deliver software services with efficiency, predictability, and quality.

Guideline R&D is a CI/CD operation. Finding the right balance between the velocity/agility of this approach and quality/predictability of the outcomes is essential for succeeding in this role.

  • Conduct up-front scoping and planning for the major R&D initiatives.
  • Facilitate WBS definition, identify dependencies, lead scheduling, manage risk, identify contingencies, perform tracking, report progress for the initiatives in flight.
  • Assess the readiness for launch and chair the release ceremonies. Articulate and mitigate the associated risks.
  • Manage the efficiency and predictability metrics throughout the software delivery cycle.
  • Mentor the members of the engineering and product teams on the efficient project management techniques.
  • Continuously observe and adjust software design and delivery process to make it optimal for the growing size of the product engineering team, customer base, and the functional complexity of the product.
  • Encourage and facilitate seamless communication and collaborative execution of software and service related initiatives across all teams involved in software design, development, sales, marketing, operations, and customer service.
  • Be a champion and dedicated practitioner of the agile development practices.
  • Design and report on the organizational KPI’s, be a principal contributor to the OKR process.
  • Be a key member of the product engineering leadership team.

The Team

Guideline’s R&D is a fast growing team in charge of building and supporting a product for our rapidly expanding customer base. We are distributed across the four US locations: San Mateo, CA / San Diego, CA / Austin, TX / Portland, ME.

We value strong work ethics and passionate technologists. We’ve accomplished a lot in just a few short years, but Guideline is just getting started. We are thrilled to build a modern technology solution to the outdated world of retirement finance.

Required qualifications

  • At least 5 years of demonstrated experience delivering commercial software products in the SaaS model.
  • Experience in a regulated industry.
  • Deep understanding of CI/CD software development and delivery cycle.
  • Ability to make intelligent trade-offs to balance speed, efficiency, quality, and risk – for the constantly evolving size and maturity of the team.
  • Hands-on leadership in agile development methodologies (Scrum, Kanban).
  • Intrinsic desire and ability to communicate, being a focal point across multiple teams; clarity and conciseness in written and oral communication.
  • Maturity of judgment; ability to think on your feet, making decisions in circumstances of uncertainty.
  • Ability to delegate and mentor effectively.
  • Being assertive, understanding when assertiveness is required.
  • Knowing what you don't know.

Desirable, but not required qualifications

  • Expert level knowledge on how to manage agile development with JIRA. Experience with building and launching mobile applications and understanding how this is different from the web apps.
  • Background in financial systems, preferably at a new generation fin-tech company.
  • Identifying, installing, and mentoring the team leads and first line managers.
  • BCS/MSCS or equivalent experience.
