The Clinical Data Curation Intern will contribute to the cleaning and structuring of real-world data (RWD) for the use of clinical analytics across the Life Sciences Business Unit of Health Catalyst.  The work of the Clinical Data Curation Intern strengthens the usefulness of clinical data primarily by annotating clinical data sets for greater interpretability, which contributes to the acceleration of clinical innovation in novel Life Sciences partnerships by the application of informatics principles.  This internship provides an outstanding opportunity to work within an interdisciplinary team to delve into multiple aspects of clinical informatics and data science and their applications in industry.

Duties & Responsibilities:

    Categorize oncology clinical data into regular form and standard terminology for precise querying by analysts and analytics tools
    Reconcile multiple data types relating to oncology into harmonized categories and values
    Review clinical notes and lab report comments to identify, link to and augment incomplete information
    Assist with encoding clinical data with clinical terminology codes and construction of associated terminology crosswalks
    Assist with data quality assurance through analysis of curation results
    Contribute to improvement of clinical curation methods
    Assist with data engineering tasks for clinical data warehouses and data marts
    Project management of cross-team or cross-enterprise projects and initiatives
    Curate other unmapped data as needed (lab tests, flowsheet observations, clinical care settings, encounter types, medications, care locations, etc.)
    Map and relate other clinical data as required (e.g., to standard terminology)
    Document data profiles, data models, data dictionaries, and architectural diagrams
    Research industry news and background information about informatics subjects, for example terminology, information architecture, and healthcare computing standards
    Assist with developing clinical database queries
    Assist with scoping and prototyping standard compliance capability, for example FHIR or OMOP
    Assemble or prepare materials for presentations and reports
    Assist with systems administration as needed
    Carry out a variety of other duties as assigned

Recommended Skills:

    Understanding of clinical data and clinical software applications
    Healthcare knowledge
    Substantial knowledge of oncology
    Knowledge of medical informatics
    Proficient in SQL
    Ability to learn quickly
    Capability to think deeply, precisely, and sensibly
    Highly motivated with ability to work independently and to integrate productively as part of a team
    Strong oral and written communication skills
    Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills

Preferred Skills:

    Clinical data encoding with standard terminology codes used in oncology
    Knowledge of clinical lab testing
    Medical record abstraction, chart review, or ability to locate and infer information from clinical data (text and structured data)
    Knowledge of information, data and software system design, for example ORM, UML, or ER diagrams.
    Understanding of quality assurance engineering
    Knowledge of infectious disease, clinical pathology, psychiatry, and neurology
    Knowledge of conceptual schema design for information modeling
    Proficiency in the programming languages Python, R, and Java

Education & Relevant Experience:

    B.S. or equivalent degree in health informatics, healthcare, biological sciences, or pre-med program; or degree applicants with relevant experience
    Previous experience in clinical data curation, clinical data abstraction, disease registry development, and clinical research coordination is a plus
    Experience using data curation tools (Symedical, CKMS, REDCap, etc.) preferred

Information Security and Compliance Responsibilities:

* Maintain compliance with training directives required by the organization pertaining to Information Security, Acceptable Use Policy, and HIPAA Privacy and Security

* Adhere to and comply with the organization’s Acceptable Use Policy

* Safeguard information system assets by identifying and reporting potential and actual security events to the organization’s Security and Compliance Officers
