About Ayar Labs

Ayar Labs helps companies keep up with skyrocketing volumes of data by miniaturizing fiber optic transceivers and making them in silicon chips, bringing the super-high bandwidths and low energy use of fiber optics inside computers.

Job Description

The Software / Embedded Systems Engineer will develop software and firmware for Ayar Labs’ electronic-photonic chips, design printed circuit boards (PCB), and perform initial chip bringup of custom systems-on-chip (SoC) platforms. As part of these roles, you will be expected to work with microcontrollers, FPGAs, and various board-level hardware/software to achieve the desired system functionality. You will be joining a small team in a dynamic startup environment, where each member is expected to take on a wide range of responsibilities and to learn and grow with the company.

Essential Functions:

  • Development and optimization of firmware/software used for controlling the hardware components of complex electronic-photonic chips with multiple high-speed SerDes
  • Design and layout of printed circuit boards, as well development of the associated software, used to test custom Ayar Labs chips
  • Perform chip bring-up and initial functional test of new custom silicon
  • Work closely with both integrated circuit designers and optical designers to understand chip features and operating modes
  • Work closely with test engineers to hand off chip testing platform after initial silicon bringup

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent skills and/or experience;
  • Minimum 1 years of strong programming background, with developing in both low-level programming languages (C/C++) as well as Python
  • Experience prototyping or designing PCB-level hardware, including schematic design, component selection, chip interface management (SPI, I2C, etc.), and PCB layout
  • Understanding of basic circuit theory and electronics at a system level
  • Experience working with microcontrollers and/or FPGAs
  • Self-driven debugger who loves digging deeper to determine a root cause

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience using DipTrace, Allegro, KiCAD, OrCAD or other PCB design tools
  • Experience in silicon bring-up and firmware development for high-speed SerDes
  • Experience with high speed digital communications silicon/system products.
  • Proficiency with version control software, such as Git
  • Proficiency in synchronous digital systems design and Verilog RTL
