Job Description

The purpose of this Group Leader role is to manage the day to day activities of a group of scientists developing our Next Generation portfolio of SPEAR T-cell products. Our Next Generation platform engineers T-cells with enhanced functionalities and/or capabilities to overcome the inhibitory tumour microenvironment, through internal research and external partnerships with industry and academia.

The Group Leader manages the scientists within their group and enable them to perform their role in achieving the company’s objectives (whether through department, project requirements or transfer to alternative departments within the company) and will have the following responsibilities and accountabilities: 

• Supporting the Department head to identify, evaluate and develop new approaches capable of enhancing product efficacy and to keep up to date with progress in the field.
• In partnership with the group’s Principal Scientists and Department head will be responsible for ensuring the appropriate level of scientific and technical knowledge is maintained within the group.
• Ensuring resource is appropriately scheduled across matrixed projects according to company priorities.
• Ensuring equipment requirements and maintenance, licensing and legal requirements are in place and outsourcing is managed appropriately.
• Ensuring the health and safety of the scientists within your group.

The Group Leader will be a motivating influence within the group, and to individual scientists in addition to providing the drive to achieve the performance that will ensure scientific and technical objectives are achieved. 

The Group Leader may also act as a Project/Work stream Leader, enabling and scientifically directing a project team to achieve a company objective.

Performance in this role (including functional and project objectives and behaviours) will be monitored through group performance and stakeholder feedback from peers (including Principal Scientists), senior management, reports (subordinates) and project team members (as outlined in the development framework for this position).

• Management: Managing the people within the group including recruitment, performance management, reward, training, development and advocating the company culture. 
• Budgetary: Dealing with resource provision and budgetary considerations of equipment, training, consumables and contracts.
• Compliance: Ensuring the group are compliant with company policies (H&S, licensing, legal etc.) and that all necessary training is available and completed.
• Resource Management: Delegating tasks and work streams to relevant individuals and being accountable for the group success within these projects.
• Scientific and Technical: Collaborating with Principal Scientists and other functions, building strong relationships to support the overall success of the company and ensuring the optimal flow and provision of data. Being available on a consultancy basis to be involved with designing experiments.
• Reporting: Representing the group from a functional or scientific point of view.


• Degree in Life sciences, or related discipline.
• Relevant post-graduate qualification preferably including an MSc or PhD in an appropriate scientific area (ideally immunology, immuno-oncology or tumour biology).
• Proven experience gained within a Pharma/biotech/commercial environment in a relevant scientific discipline or technical area to enable provision of knowledgeable and detailed scientific leadership.
• Extensive understanding of relevant laboratory procedures/disciplines performed by the group
• Demonstrable people management experience including supervision of other scientist(s).
