Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Authorization Specialist to join our team. This position is responsible for obtaining pre-authorizations for our health plan members traveling out of their service area to obtain medical services. This position will work closely with health plans, a diverse member population and with internal departments to ensure all authorizations are received and posted in a timely and efficient manner.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Request, track and obtain pre-authorization of services from health plans for members traveling outside of their service area for medical services

  • Request, follow up and secure prior-authorizations prior to services being performed

  • Communicate pre-authorization approvals directly with health plan members and Travel Department in a timely manner

  • Maintains a level of productivity suitable for the department

  • Clearly documents all communications and contacts with health plans, members and medical facilities

  • Verify appointment dates and time with medical facilities and ensure they coincide with with pre-authorizations details

  • Other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Minimum of one (1) year of medical prior authorization experience

  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior in-bound Call Center experience, heavy phone volume

  • Data entry required and/or experience in a fast-paced, high-level customer service oriented environment

  • Project tracking and documentation

  • Experience with HIPAA regulations

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Some college preferred

  • Knowledge of Medicaid NEMT guidelines

  • Bilingual Spanish


  • Outstanding problem-solving skills and ability to use soft skills in a high stress environment

  • Possess a high level of empathy with the ability to work in a positive manner with members, vendors and health plans

  • Extremely high work ethic with a focus on member satisfaction

  • Efficient in managing large amounts of data

  • Ability to meet deadlines with maximum efficiency

  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and demonstrated ability to communicate, present, and influence effectively in-person, via email, and over the phone

  • Ability to work with culturally diverse populations

  • Type a minimum of 35wpm

  • Ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances quickly

  • Ability to work independently and with internal and external teams

Job Requirements

  • Must be able to pass criminal background record check

  • Must be US Citizen

  • Ability to work flexible shifts

Job Type: Full-time
