We’re building a movement - an education revolution. We’re building a world where anyone, anywhere can have access to the best education regardless of where they were born. At our core, we believe education is a right, not a privilege. To that end, we’re building a company and a suite of products to lead the charge in transforming access to education. ApplyBoard is an online platform that empowers students around the world to access the best education by connecting international students, recruitment partners, and academic institutions. We simplify the study abroad search, application, and acceptance process. Not only do we help students with their study abroad journey, but we also help academic institutions to find the best students globally. Our goal is to help enable better, more diverse, schools that are enriched with cultures from all over the world.

The Opportunity:

As a DataOps Engineer, you will be a hands-on senior engineer within the Cloud Services team.  You will be working under the direction of the Director of Cloud Services.  You will be entrusted with the sacred duty of protecting the data for millions of students globally!

You will have primary responsibility for ensuring the performant, smooth and secure operation of various data systems in both Development and Production environments.   This is to be achieved by ensuring that the infrastructure is appropriately architected and implemented as well as the deployment for the related Infrastructure as code is tested and maintained appropriately.   You will utilize your expertise to proactively work with members of the DevOps team in Cloud Services as well as with the Product Development teams to ensure a consistent and seamless transition from development to production.

You will also be responsible for ensuring that the data is secure, protected and meets the various required security and privacy related regulatory requirements - including those relating to technical safeguards as well as process and procedural controls.  In addition to the technical safeguards, data integrity checks and data clean-up may occasionally be required.

What you’ll be doing every day:

      • Advise teams on best practices for data design and access in a cloud-native environment (AWS)
      • Advise and build ETL pipelines as required by different products
      • Oversight of data pipelines and jobs and troubleshoot when needed
      • Monitoring the uptime and performance of the various data systems
      • Preserving data integrity
      • Ethically handling private data, including financial and/or personally identifiable data.
      • Perform quality control on imported data
Team work (we mean it)
    • Manage daily workload based on defined tasks and deadlines and proactively communicate delays that could impact client timelines
    • Collaborate with Product Development, Customer Experience, and Sales Operations teams to identify and document process improvements, and work collaboratively to implement the changes
    • Collaborate with the rest of the DevOps & Cloud services team and utilize their expertise in Security and Cloud deployments

What you bring to the table:

    • 3+ years of experience as a Data Engineer
    • Strong knowledge of cloud native data (Relational, NoSQL, Storage, other)
    • Strong hands on experience in Cloud-Native datastores (preferably AWS)
    • Proven experience with building and maintaining ETL pipelines at scale (Python, Scala, etc.)
    • Working experience with different data access models (transactional, streaming, batch processing)
    • Some experience with DevOps and CI/CD Pipeline infrastructure as code
    • Great communication skills.  (Yes, everyone writes that - but we really mean it.)
    • Demonstrated ownership and pride in the quality of the software and infrastructure you work on, and the way that it succeeds in meeting the needs of its users
    • Ability to explain and defend an informed opinion while maintaining an open mind
    • Experience with engineering and operational practices and processes which promote incrementalism, frequent delivery and tight feedback loops - without sacrificing quality
    • Strong depth of practical experience and knowledge of Amazon Web Services

Ideally, you also have experience with some of:

      • AWS, Glue, Data Pipeline, Docker, Kubernetes, New Relic
      • Relational databases (mySQL, PostgreSQL), MongoDB, RedShift, DynamoDB
      • Python
      • Jenkins, CodeBuild, Terraform, Helm Charts
      • Microservices, RESTful APIs, JSON, Kafka
      • Observability, Infrastructure as Code
      • Developing and maintaining products in a fast growing startup with products that are used by hundreds of thousands or millions of customers.
      • EdTech, eCommerce, or content-management software
      • ITIL
      • Service Ticketing Systems
      • AWS Certifications including  “AWS Certified Solutions Architect” and “AWS Certified Big Data - Specialty”
