Job Profile Summary

The Coding Integrity and Educational Coordinator performs coding and CDI auditing activities as requested by Vitalware clients while also managing these projects to ensure timely completion. This position will generally be structured with 80%-85% coding audit duties and 20%-15% with project management activities. Timely completion of these projects are accomplished by:

    Confirming client confidentiality/privacy agreements are completed and submitted in a timely manner by all project auditors.
    Monitoring overall project and auditor productivity.
    Obtaining auditor access to client systems through password assignment.
    Training staff and contractors on client systems.
    Perform audits with a heavy focus in CDI (opportunities for improvement based on clinical criteria, querying, improved coding, and/or improved documentation)

Educational activities include functioning as a coding resource for project auditors and internal Vitalware staff as well as performing research activities on client inquiries via Client Services staff and/or MyAdvisor. The Coding Integrity and Educational Coordinator also supports the Coding and Content Quality Team as needed with Vitalware software content review and analysis and creates and delivers public webinars related to key industry coding and reimbursement topics.

Duties & Responsibilities

    Performs coding and CDI audits by reviewing cases for accurate coding, monitoring the assignment, and sequencing of ICD10 and CPT codes to facilitate the correct assignment of diagnostic and procedure codes. Heavy focus on CDI activities and identification for opportunities for improvement through better CDI and/or querying activities.
    Sequences diagnoses and procedures accurately according to coding principles. Utilizes Vitalware proprietary software to facilitate thorough, uniform, and precise code assignment.
    Writes well-reasoned auditing reviews in a narrative style, with accurate spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure
    Keeps abreast of new regulatory requirements, annual revisions to the codes/DRG, etc. and applies this information appropriately.
    Adapts to changing priorities in order to meet Client requirements and productivity standards and deadlines.
    Assists with the development and training of continuing education opportunities specific to ICD10 and CPT coding for Vitalware staff.
    Works as subject matter expert and provides written/verbal training and in-services when applicable.
    Provides direction to other Vitalware auditing personnel to ensure effective operation of auditing activities to meet project goals, objectives and .
    Assists in the implementation of policy & procedure changes related to coding and quality improvement.
    Provides support to Vitalware’s MyAdvisor feature through supportive research.
    Provides ideas and support to Product Development team for improvement to Vitalware’s suite of technologies
    Maintains credentialed status through successful completion of exams and/or continuing education requirements as defined by the Council on Certification of the American Health Information Management Association.

Important Soft & Technical Skills

    Specialized knowledge

    Subject matter expertise related to Medicare hospital inpatient/outpatient and physician payment systems.
    Subject matter expert in CDI principles and clinical knowledge of disease processes and medical treatments
    Must be experienced with coding software (encoding, grouper, and abstracting applications) and various EHRs (EPIC, Meditech, Cerner, CPSI, etc.).

    Skills
        Strong project management and organizational skills required
        Strong presentation skills (client presentations and public speaking/webinars)
        Strong written, listening and verbal communication skills required; previous technical and/or business writing skills preferred.
        Strong customer service skills.
        Strong data analysis and research skills. Ability to research complex coding and CDI issues and provide official supportive source authority for recommendations.
        Demonstrated proficiency with intermediate PC skills in Word, Excel, Outlook required.

    Abilities
        Advanced problem solving and high analytical skills required.
        Must be self-motivated and able to work addressing objectives without supervision.
        Able to handle and resolve issues/objections diplomatically and respectfully.

Nice to Have Soft & Technical Skills

Relevant Experience & Education  (Optional)

    Education
        High school diploma or GED required.
        1-2 years college in related field preferred.
        Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.
    Professional Certification  
        One of the following certifications is required:  Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA); Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT); CDIP (Certified Clinical Documentation Improvement Practitioner); CCDS (Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist; or (Certified Coding Specialist (CCS).
    Experience
        Minimum of 10 years inpatient/outpatient combined coding experience required.
        Minimum of 5 years coding experience in an acute care hospital environment required.
        Previous auditing, consulting and/or education experience required.
