Job Description

IonQ is developing the world's first fully-expressive, full-stack quantum computer based on trapped ion technology. We are pushing past the limits of classical physics and current supercomputing technology. These computers are poised to unlock the staggering potential of the quantum realm and help remake industries like medicine, materials science, simulation, finance, strong A.I., machine learning, cryptography, high-performance supercomputing, and more.


We are looking for a senior engineer with industrial micro/nanofabrication experience to help guide process development of next-generation chip-scale ion trap technology.

As a senior engineer, you will help define, design, and develop core pieces of our next-generation physics packages, the heart of our quantum computers. You will be a member of the team of engineers and physicists that designs, fabricates, and packages our ion trapping modules and develops technologies for future integration. You will guide our micro/nanofabrication partners, track progress and processes, and explore options and technologies that extend our capabilities. You will collaborate within the team to design components, define the project plans for fabricating these components, and develop characterization capabilities to ensure devices meet our needs and to provide feedback to our fabrication partners.  


The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment, have the ability to support multiple people, manage multiple diverse tasks and projects, and be a driving force for process development, while maintaining a high level of attention to detail.



  • 10+ years of experience in microfabrication or nanofabrication process development
  • 5+ years of experience leading microfabrication or nanofabrication process development in an industrial setting
  • Working knowledge of microfabrication or nanofabrication processes, their compatibilities, and their limits
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, an attention to detail, and a collaborative mindset
  • Cleanroom experience handling, inspecting, and characterizing microfabricated devices
  • Proficiency in examining and editing device masks in L-Edit, Klayout, or similar



  • Experience with custom microfabrication or nanofabrication process development
  • Experience with MEMS device fabrication or MEMS fabrication techniques
  • Experience with fabrication and characterization of photonic integrated devices and circuits
  • Packaging experience that includes integration of electrical, mechanical, and optical components
  • Familiarity with thermal, electrical, and mechanical modeling of devices in COMSOL or similar. 
  • Proficiency programming in Python
  • Experience using 3D CAD tools like Autodesk Inventor or Solidworks
