Job Description

Bright Health is seeking a Director, Controller, of the Medicare Advantage (MA) business.  This is a critical new role for the company that will be developing GAAP accounting and reporting processes and controls for the regulated MA entities, primarily in California.  The position will report to the Chief Accounting Officer based in Minneapolis, and will partner closely with corporate and subsidiary accounting, statutory reporting, actuarial, FP&A, legal and other key areas.  The controller will build out the processes and controls to manage a SOX 404 standard MA accounting and reporting function for the organization.  

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Oversee all accounting related workflows for the MA product line, which includes complex topics around IBNR (and related coordination with corporate actuaries), provider risk share and capitation arrangement accounting, and other healthcare industry concepts
    • Lead the month-end accounting close function for the MA business, ensuring timely subsidiary close that aligns with corporate calendar, and includes the necessary balance sheet reconciliations and analysis
    • Lead the compilation of the GAAP and/or statutory financial statements of the MA related legal entities, coordinating with corporate and subsidiary accounting and reporting resources to ensure timely filings to the respective insurance departments
    • Coordinate with corporate technical accounting staff to ensure timely research and policy documentation surrounding current and emerging accounting guidance
    • Build and maintain strong internal controls over financial reporting, to a SOX 404 standard (e.g., account reconciliations aligned with corporate standard, comprehensive support behind all journal entries and accounting decisions, documented conclusions around any significant estimates)
    • Collaborate with broader controllership team and external auditors for financial statement audits and reviews
    • Actively participate in and provide counsel on key projects such as corporate ERP uplift initiatives and M&A efforts
    • Manage, coach and develop staff, including participating in the talent management, staff evaluation, and new hire processes
    • Utilize external resources where necessary

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

    • Bachelor’s degree required; degree in accounting preferred
    • Ten (10) or more years of comprehensive controllership, accounting and reporting experience required
    • Healthcare industry accounting experience required, including in-depth knowledge of medical claims/IBNR accounting, revenue recognition principles, risk adjustment and similar concepts required
    • Three (3) or more years public accounting experience preferred
    • CPA

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES

    • Proven track record of leading accounting and reporting teams
    • Experience leading across a matrixed environment
    • Excellent written and oral presentation skills, with proven ability to present and explain complex information to diverse audiences
    • Strong ERP knowledge, preferably Oracle Cloud, and experience migrating subsidiary general ledger platforms to corporate ERP environment
    • Strong financial reporting controls acumen, at a SOX 404 standard
    • Experience evaluating new or emerging trends and transferring knowledge to key stakeholders
    • Prior experience hiring and developing staff
    • Robust prioritization skills, with the ability to reprioritize and respond to urgent management requests

LICENSURES AND CERTIFICATIONS

    • Certified Public Accountant licensure required
