About Spruce Health

Spruce is the leading platform for communication and care outside of the exam room.

Job Description

As a backend engineer at Spruce, you will be part of a tight-knit and lean engineering team where we have a strong sense of ownership and passion for our craft. You will have a large influence in building and maintaining a platform that is loved by both patients and medical providers across America.

We’re looking for people with a strong background in building high-quality systems and products. You’re comfortable working on production systems with lots of moving pieces, are open to learning new technologies, and enjoy working on various aspects of a backend system — user-facing features, developer operations, internal tooling, and more.

A bit about our stack: Our backend is written in Go, as multiple services that interact via gRPC. Our client-facing APIs are specified in GraphQL. We use Terraform to deploy and manage our infrastructure on AWS.

Expect to:

  • Design, build, and maintain APIs, services, and infrastructure that power the Spruce platform for medical practices, patients, and internal teams
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to build delightful features that address the needs of both internal and external users
  • Debug production issues across services and multiple levels of the stack
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes
  • Manage feature roadmap based on priorities and estimations

This might be for you if you:

  • Have 3+ years experience as a fulltime backend engineer, and in writing high-quality code in any language
  • Have built and supported high-quality production systems from the ground up
  • Thrive off of working on various aspects of the system — devops, systems architecture, user-facing features, and internal tooling
  • Have strong CS fundamentals, and a sound understanding of web protocols, databases, and distributed systems
  • Hold yourself and others to a high bar when working with production systems. The market we serve requires a highly available and redundant system, where downtime is never an option.
  • Enjoy troubleshooting and getting to the root cause of problems
  • Have a pragmatic approach and know how to make the right tradeoffs among competing priorities
  • Feel comfortable with ambiguity, when necessary, and can move things forward with incomplete information
  • Can be effective working in a distributed team setting, where written, asynchronous communication and mutual respect are paramount

How we operate
We’re an intentionally lean team so that we can strike the right balance of coordination, ownership, and speed. We prefer smaller, more collaborative teams where everyone is uniquely talented, hungry for ownership, and seeking to grow and work at their own pace. If you’re the type of person who has outgrown what the promotion timelines at your company allow for, and you’re chomping at the bit for a bigger and more impactful role, we may be the company for you.
