About Lacework

Lacework delivers threat/anomaly detection and compliance across multicloud environments, workloads, containers and K8s.

Job Description

Cloud computing is revolutionizing IT and forcing organizations to rethink their approach to cloud security. Lacework is at the forefront of this transformation. We enable security teams to effectively secure public and private clouds – AWS, Azure or collocations – by eliminating repetitive, manual and labor-intensive security tasks. Using Lacework, security teams operate security at the same pace as DevOps, which relies on automated tools to publish daily updates to the cloud.

Lacework is led by an experienced team who have built large scale systems at Google, Paraccel (Amazon Redshift), Pure Storage, Oracle, and Juniper networks. Lacework is well funded by a tier-one VC firm and is based in San Jose, CA.

Our team is responsible for identifying and executing cost-saving opportunities, providing engineering teams meaningful visibility into spend, and empowering finance to understand and incorporate the complexities of cloud costs.

This is part engineering role and part BI role that will partner with Engineering to help correlate usage and spend and you’ll work closely with Finance to help build modeling forecasts. You will dig deep into cloud costs to help provide deeper meaning to Lacework’s cloud spend and leverage those learnings to drive and implement those optimizations.

The Cloud Optimization team is relatively new at Lacework and you will help grow the team to be effective as the company - and spend - grows.

The ideal candidate is a software engineer who knows how to apply engineering principles to infrastructure and is business-minded. You are a leader and team player with a transformational mindset. You can adapt seamlessly into the organization, technically savvy, work cross-functionally, and enjoy diving deep into a system to understand and optimize it.  You keep up with the major cloud providers' product offerings and have the hands-on expertise to design, deploy, and optimize cloud services.

Your Role:
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of the Lacework platform and the cloud technologies it’s built on.
  • Identify bottlenecks and/or improvements in our architecture, algorithms, infrastructure, and other areas to improve efficiency and reduce cost.
  • Develop and/or identify strategies to efficiently use and optimize cloud technologies and services.
  • Analyze data patterns deriving insights to inform and influence architecture and technology decisions and present solutions to engineering and product leadership.
  • Establish and track key performance and cost metrics as service level objectives (SLOs) that Engineering and Operations can track towards.
  • Work with our cloud vendors to identify changes, alternative implementations, and drive new features that will drive cost savings and/or increase efficiency.
  • Drive projects/technical initiatives and architectural/service improvements.
  • Implement cost optimization improvements for our infrastructure on Snowflake, AWS, Azure, and GCP.
  • Drive regular operational and cost reviews with leadership.
  • Passion for optimization and curiosity to deeply understand how systems work.
  • Hands-on expertise to design, deploy and optimize cloud services.
  • Software development background and demonstrated proficiency in at least one of the following: Python, Go, or Java.
  • Deep understanding and proficiency with common IaaS services/components and architectures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in a cloud-native business.
  • Experience optimizing cloud expenditure and architectures preferably in AWS.
  • Experience with data visualization, SQL, and building dashboards using large datasets.

  • Desire to "build for lazy" and build systems and computers that reason for us.
  • Cloud certifications or other demonstrable cloud domain knowledge.
  • Experience with monitoring & observability systems like Prometheus or DataDog and tools or frameworks like telegraf and OpenTracing.
  • Believe everything should be "as code".

We'd love to hear from you if these kinds of challenges excite you, and you want your work to make a positive difference in the world!

How do you want to make your impact?
