Vayu’s mission is to deliver them at a transformational scale, and to improve working lives in one of the country’s biggest industry sectors. The company is currently in stealth and will officially launch in 2021.

Job Description

Vayu is re-imagining the trillion-dollar U.S. B2B card payments infrastructure, with a focus on the country’s 500,000 commercial fleets, 10 million commercial vehicles, and 4 million commercial drivers. The incumbent technologies that cater to these customers are decades old, and drivers, fleets, and the merchants that serve them all increasingly demand modern digital experiences and affordable and transparent financial services products. Vayu’s mission is to deliver them at a transformational scale, and to improve working lives in one of the country’s biggest industry sectors. The company is currently in stealth, backed by top fintech and mobility venture funds, and will officially launch in 2021.

The Director of Engineering will be directly responsible for the growth and execution of the engineering team in close collaboration with the product manager, engineering technical leader/architect, and CEO. This is a management role that is ultimately accountable for building and operating an engineering team that delivers world-class working software to further the business’s mission.

The Director of Engineering will:

  • recruit and manage individual engineers and other engineering managers;
  • execute a disciplined agile methodology and process;
  • define consistent engineering standards and practices and reporting metrics;
  • help shape the initial engineering culture of the company;
  • play a leading role in technology and implementation choices;
  • create a culture that emphasizes thoughtful leadership and teams;
  • enable the professional growth within Vayu of engineers and managers at all career stages;
  • and be ready to get hands on, conduct code reviews in substantive detail and dive in when necessary to unblock the team.

The Director of Engineering must:

  • be an experienced leader of first-class engineering teams with a proven track record of consistent and frequent delivery of quality software;
  • have extensive experience steering cross-functional agile teams in collaboration with product and design;
  • have a strong philosophy of software methodology and management;
  • in their own right be an accomplished and respected software engineer with experience with multiple languages, tools, and frameworks from the modern development stack;
  • and be able to work independently with little oversight or management in a fast-paced, dynamic environment with high-energy and mission-driven colleagues.

Critically, the candidate must be practical and business-minded, smart and creative, and excited about the rewards and volatility of an early-stage venture-backed startup.
