Job Description

In this position you will be responsible for leading the Cell and Tissue Profiling Team within the Preclinical Research department. You will drive the strategy and implementation of a variety of profiling techniques for samples from a wide range of groups across Research. 

The aim of this team is to provide a wide and consistent characterisation of cells and tissues that are used within Research, which is essential for meaningful interpretation of data using these cells and tissues. The group will work closely with the profiling teams in Translational Sciences (who look at clinical samples), the Tissue Models and Biobank groups, and other groups from across the early stage to preclinical pipeline. 

The postholder will require a broad knowledge of profiling techniques such as flow cytometry, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and other cell biology processes. 

• Leadership: Manage a multidisciplinary team implementing a wide variety of profiling techniques, drawing on experience in for example transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, flow cytometry and other cell biology processes.
• Management: Managing the members of the group including recruitment, performance management, reward, training, development and ensuring the company culture. Delegating tasks and work streams to relevant individuals and being accountable for the group success within relevant projects.
• Compliance: Ensuring the group are compliant with company policies (H&S, licensing, legal etc.) and that all necessary training is available and completed.
• Resource Management: Dealing with resource provision and budgetary considerations of equipment, training, consumables and contracts.
• Scientific and Technical: Collaborating with other functions, building strong relationships to support the overall success of the function and ensuring the optimal flow and provision of data. 
• Reporting: Representing the group from a functional or scientific point of view to senior leadership, such as the Research Leadership Team.


• PhD in an appropriate scientific area and substantial relevant post-graduate experience, including experience in an Industrial/Biotech setting.
• Extensive relevant experience of cell biology, cell signalling and profiling techniques including but not limited to transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and flow cytometry. 
• People management experience (including performance management, training, coaching and personal development).

• Experience of managing cross-functional projects.
• Experience working in or supervising a core facility, including maintaining SOPs and ensuring research data quality.
• Experience with GCLP for working with clinical samples, including HTA requirements and validation of bioanalytical methods.


• Excellent communication and presentation skills and the ability to communicate to a variety of audiences including senior management and project teams.
• Aptitude to work in a collaborative, cross-functional and adaptable manner, with a diplomatic and balanced approach.  
• Aptitude in resource management. 
• Autonomy, authority and confidence in scientific decision making.
• Understanding of company policies.
• Ability to delegate tasks and actions appropriately.
