Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
Adaptimmune is a leader in the development of T cell-based therapies for the treatment of cancer. Adaptimmune has programmes in clinical trials as well as an exciting pipeline of new targets. The Company's unique SPEAR (Specific Peptide Enhanced Affinity Receptor) T‑cell platform enables the engineering of T-cells to target and destroy cancer, including hard-to-treat solid tumours.

The Pipeline Engineering group, in Preclinical Research, has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist or Senior Scientist with a background in protein engineering, biochemical or cell-based assays and automation.

As a member of the Pipeline Engineering group, your role would involve engineering T cell receptors for optimal affinity, potency and specificity. You will be expected to plan and carry out experiments with minimal supervision but may still require scientific guidance from Senior Scientists and the Group Leader. The postholder will develop further scientific skills to be able to work more independently on routine experiments and interpret results with minimal supervision from Senior Scientists. Finally, you will be expected to write reports and protocols, present data at group meetings and on occasion to larger audiences, for example at company science days.

The successful candidate will require prior industry experience in molecular biology and biochemical or cell-based screening approaches, preferably applied to the antibody, TCR or CAR-T engineering, and ideally experience in automation of laboratory procedures.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Conducting lab work and supporting colleagues, the department and Adaptimmune’s projects (e.g. molecular biology, protein biochemistry and biochemical or cell-based assays such as DNA mutagenesis and cloning, mammalian cell and bacterial protein expression and purification, SPR or flow cytometry).
• In collaboration with Senior Scientists and Team Leader plan, analyse, summarise and record experimental results, and maintain relevant databases and records (e.g.  electronic lab book).
• Participate in department and project meetings and discussions.
• Routine lab maintenance.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Required
• Undergraduate degree in Life Sciences, or related discipline.
• Industry experience within pharma or biotech space, preferably including a MSc or PhD in a relevant scientific area. 
• Experience of laboratory procedures, such as molecular biology methods, protein engineering, biochemical or cell-based screening. 
• Ability to learn and develop to work independently on routine experiments within a reasonable time frame.

Desirable 
• Experience with process optimisation and automation.
• Experience in antibody, TCR or CAR-T field.
• Understanding of protein engineering in T-cell therapy space.
• A background in immunology or immunotherapy, especially of cancer.
• Familiar with coding languages, especially in R.

SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

Required
• Computer literate, with ability to familiarise with different IT systems.
• Excellent numeracy and English language skills (both written and verbal).
• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).
• Ability to write and follow protocols.
• Ability to design experiments and studies to address key scientific questions.
• High attention to detail and good time management skills.
• Strong team player but with the ability to work independently as well.
• Knowledge and skills to use of standard laboratory equipment.
• Technical interest and enthusiasm.

Desirable
• Use of more specialist lab equipment (AKTA purification systems, gel documentation systems, UV spectrometers, SPR machines).
• Previous experience of analysis of protein-protein interactions.
• Experience in mammalian cell culture, cell-based assays for high throughput screening (e.g. reporter-gene cell lines, luminescence readouts, flow cytometry).
• Experience with use of liquid handling robots.
• Ability to write standard operating procedures, experiment plans and reports.
• Advanced experimental design skills (improvements, next steps).
