Job Description

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY
Adaptimmune’s Off-the-Shelf T cell project is focused on the development of an iPSC derived T-cell product. The project team is growing rapidly to enable delivery of a ground-breaking new therapy and ensure the company’s position as a leader in the allogeneic cell therapy field. Gene editing is an integral part of the process and the gene editing team is expanding. A senior scientist is required to join the gene editing team to help support the following duties.

• Plan and execute experimental work.
• Evaluation and optimisation of novel gene editing methodologies.
• Development of gene editing platform capabilities or targeting strategies.
• Training junior members of the team in editing methodologies and data analysis. 
• Gene editing in iPSC lines- Transgene knock-in and gene inactivation.
• Isolation and genotyping of single cell clones.
• Molecular characterisation of edited iPSC lines.
• Working extremely closely with colleagues in other R & D teams as part of a cross functional project team. There may also be the opportunity to functionally differentiate edited iPSC clones.

Reporting to Associate Director the purpose of this role is to primarily conduct scientific experiments to support either the departmental objectives or company project objectives as necessary within dedicated scientific or project team.

The Senior Scientist will be expected to conduct and analyse their experiments independently within minimal guidance from group/functional principal scientists.  

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• In partnership with the Principal Scientist, designing and conducting experiments appropriate for the individual function and/or discipline to enable group and/or project objectives. 
• Analyse, summarise and record experimental results.
• Participate proactively and productively in group and project meetings and discussions.
• Contribute to routine lab maintenance.
• Operate applicable/specialist equipment and modify procedures to suit business needs.
• Provide technical support to external collaborations. Responsible for third party interactions.
• Solve complex problems. Take a new perspective on existing solutions.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

Required
• Undergraduate degree in Lifesciences or related discipline.
• Extensive post-graduate experience in an industrial setting.
• Understanding and practical experience of gene editing and molecular characterisation of edited cells.
• Gene editing with viral or non-viral repair templates. 
• Transfection of RNA/DNA.
• Ability to work independently on routine experiments.
• Has knowledge and experience of a range of scientific techniques in this field. 
• Ability to learn and develop in order to work independently on non-routine experiments within a reasonable time frame.
• Aseptic cell culture experience.
• Gene editing in mammalian cell lines, preferably iPSC.
• Enthusiasm for technical challenges.
• Is aware of best practice in this field.

Desirable 
• Has experience of leading projects and project teams.
• Post graduate degree preferable including an MSc or PhD in a relevant scientific area.
• Experience with design and construction of viral and/or non-viral expression vectors.
• Purification of viral vectors AAV/lentivirus.
• Analysis of next generation sequencing data.
• Digital PCR. 
• Experience of generating genetically modified cell lines from single cell clones.
• Single cell cloning technologies.
• Stem cell culture.
• Experience of interacting with external partners.
