Job Description

We are seeking a Software Engineer to help drive development of the next generation of laser-based analytical instrumentation that will be capable of high precision molecular analysis in complex gas mixtures. The Software Engineer will be responsible for developing the software architecture and code needed to enable highly robust, multi-step spectroscopic analysis on instruments that will be used by scientists and industry professionals world-wide. We are looking for a creative scientist with extensive programming experience, who understands the challenges of interfacing software and instrumentation hardware; is adept at managing, analyzing, and displaying large amounts of scientific data; and is capable of developing a deep understanding of Picarro’s core technology and the hybrid hardware / software algorithms that run on the instruments. Competence in data analysis techniques such as curve fitting (linear and non-linear methods), statistical analysis, and linear algebra is highly desirable.

The Software Engineer must
  • Design and develop reliable and highly functional software to support advanced spectroscopic analysis on Picarro’s next generation of molecular analyzers; the troubleshooting tools needed by our service partners; the configuration and calibration tools needed by our manufacturing team; and the development tools needed by our new product introduction team.
  • Understand the software development life cycle – including planning, developing, troubleshooting, documenting, integrating, and analyzing software applications.
  • Work closely with project managers, engineering, research and development, marketing, manufacturing and technical support. Must be able to understand software requests, acquire specifications, manage project scopes, and provide fast and accurate solutions.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, or related field, with Masters or Ph.D. desirable.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in data acquisition software development, data processing and analysis, and/or control algorithm design.
  • Expert Pythonista.
  • Experience creating software to interface with scientific instruments and/or test equipment
  • Background in scientific data processing and statistical analysis
  • Experience in developing algorithms for controlling and monitoring physical systems
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Strong analytical, debugging, and problem-solving skills
  • Proactive, creative, fast-paced, and quality-oriented
Related Skills and Experience:
  • Practical understanding of writing software optimized to run on GPUs.
  • Experience in software modeling and simulation for engineering applications
  • Experience in elegant, intelligent, and reusable high-level design techniques
  • Fluency in version control processes and software tools.
  • Scientific or engineering experience in spectroscopy, laser physics, or similar disciplines desirable.
