About NGM Bio

NGM Bio is a research-driven, clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company with a passion to improve the lives of those struggling with serious diseases. Our expertise in drug discovery and translational development, coupled with the significant resources from our partnership with Merck, is driving development of transformational medicines that dramatically improve human health.

Job Description

NGM Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to discovering and developing the next generation of medicines for the treatment of serious diseases.  Our experienced scientific team has joined forces with an impressive group of industry professionals, Nobel Laureates and other distinguished researchers to build a company where innovation and cutting-edge science has provided the foundation for a robust drug discovery engine that has a track record of generating one new IND candidate per year.  NGM’s current pipeline of clinical-stage programs consists of five drug candidates targeting liver and metabolic diseases, retinal diseases and cancer.  The most advanced drug candidate, aldafermin (NGM282), is in Phase 2b clinical studies in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and is wholly-owned by NGM.  Another drug candidate, NGM621, is in a Phase 2 study in geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).  NGM’s strategic collaboration with Merck, with a current term running to March 2022, provides us with the resources and flexibility to pursue our ambitious R&D goals and further extend our pipeline of novel drug candidates.
NGM is excited to hire a highly motivated researcher to develop new technologies in the Cell Line Development and Engineering (CLD&E) group. This position involves making and improving cell lines to express biologics as part of the drug development pipeline. It is a perfect role for a team-oriented and scientifically curious molecular/cell biologist who wants to contribute to the development of medicines.

    • Engineer cell lines to improve protein expression; this includes overexpression and knockouts
    • Perform cell-based functional assays to characterize cell lines using FACS and immunostaining
    • Analyze expressed proteins using ELISA, Octet, and Western Blot
    • Design, engineer, and clone expression constructs using restriction-free and restriction-based cloning, primer design, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and sequence analysis
    • Maintain detailed experimental records and document results in an electronic notebook
    • Design studies of development, troubleshooting, and process characterization
    • Analyze data using statistical tools such as Microsoft Excel, Prism, and JMP
    • Prepare reports in collaboration with the Quality team in preparation for IND filings
    • Deliver summaries and presentations to internal research audience
    • Communicate with different project teams and CROs

    • B.S. in a relevant field (cell biology, molecular biology, genetics, bioengineering); candidates with Master’s degrees and work experience will be considered for appropriate higher levels
    • Substantive experience working in a fast-paced team environment with deadlines and dynamic priorities
    • Scientific curiosity: enthusiasm for new ideas and the implementation of new methodologies in the pursuit of biological discoveries
    • Team-Orientation: somebody who finds personal gratification in team success, appreciates and acknowledges their teammate’s contributions, and aligns personal growth opportunities with team needs
    • Strong organization and time management skills; able to contribute to multiple simultaneous projects
    • Track record of communicating effectively across different project teams and scientific disciplines

Additional (non-required) Preferred Experiences
