Job Description

The Senior Manager/Associated Director of Technical Accounting will report to the Director of Accounting and will work closely and build relationships with the accounting/financial reporting team and across multiple functions and levels within Mersana. To be successful in this role, you will have deep prior accounting experience, but also have a strong desire to supplement your skillset with an understanding of operations and FP&A.

This role will have a unique opportunity to lead the company through a variety of complex technical accounting matters, while also working closely and gaining a strong understanding of key operational aspects of our business. In this role, you will form close partnerships with the clinical operations team to understand their budget, their vendors, their work completed to date, the likely changes, risks, and opportunities and integrate this information into a robust clinical accrual as part of the financial close process. Development of a strong clinical accrual process will be critical as the company expands its portfolio of clinical trial programs. You will work collaboratively to share information and insights with FP&A, developing an understanding of the clinical model forecasts to provide analysis on the budget to actual results quarterly. You will also be responsible for working closely with the external audit firm to engage and drive to resolution a variety of technical accounting matters.

Your experience will enable you to perform the following tasks in a detailed and dead-line oriented manner:

Clinical Accrual

  • Perform data analysis and requirements gathering in partnership with FP&A and Clinical Operations to help drive clinical accrual development
  • Evaluate and challenge data received from CROs based on underlying assumptions/ judgements within the process
  • Assist Clinical Operations managers in reviewing and validating invoice details
  • Manage clinical trial site cost schedules including building out processes that allow for monitoring of costs, explaining variances to expectations and identifying information gaps
  • Collaboratively work with FP&A to share information and analysis.

Technical Accounting

  • Execute technical accounting matters, including carrying out research and documentation for a variety of complex and non-standard contracts such as collaboration agreements, equity and/or debt offerings, adoption of key new standards and general corporate accounting matters.
  • General matters: pharmaceutical development, capitalization, inventory, stock compensation, facilities, other
  • Interpret U.S. GAAP accounting standards and partner with key cross-functional business partners to provide insight on material, complex, unusual transactions.
  • Assist SEC Reporting Manager in drafting footnotes and other required disclosures for our quarterly and annual filings with the SEC, as needed.
  • Evaluate the impact of new accounting standards, prepare an assessment paper and execute the implementation.

Product / Collaboration Revenue

  • Build out revenue processes as new collaboration deals are realized
  • Assist with preparation of procedures/polices for Commercial Product Revenue (Gross to Net)
  • Ensure review and compliance with ASC 606 requirements, material rights, and other revenue estimates


The other stuff

This is typically a role best suited for BS in Accounting who possess at least 7 years’ experience in a combination of big four public accounting firm/ biopharmaceutical industry in a technical accounting role. You should also have the following experience/knowledge:

  • Experience with preparing technical accounting analyses within a public company setting and related disclosures within financial statements.
  • Understanding of complex clinical trial accruals
  • Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP with ability to research guidance to determine proper accounting treatment.
  • Proven ability to work with a high degree of energy, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively at all levels across an organization, be detailed and deadline-oriented, with a demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks with varying priorities.
