Job Description

Harnessing the Microbiome for Sustainable Food and Agriculture

Microbes play critical roles in areas ranging from agriculture to human and animal health. When they work together, their efficiency is greater than the sum of their parts. Harnessing their potential is an imperative to a sustainable future on a resource-limited planet. Boost Biomes’ high throughput culturing, sequencing and advanced informatics platform generates unique data sets about agriculturally relevant microbiomes. Scientists at Boost Biomes use this unique data set to discover and develop advanced microbial products for food security, food abundance, food safety and reduced food waste. The company’s first products will manage diseases of high-value crops.

The company recently announced a Series A financing led by Yara International, the global crop nutrition company, and including solid investors like Viking Global Investors, Y Combinator and Universal Materials Incubator (UMI), a Japanese venture capital firm focusing on chemicals and material science; the total round exceeds $7.5M.


Leveraging the Power of Ecology

The biologics space is growing at a rapid pace. From using microbes as unique fingerprints for traceability to combating foodborne illness, microbes offer attractive applications in the food supply chain. Using the powerful social networks among microbes to provide novel, sustainable solutions to feed and heal people everywhere, Boost Biomes’ technology differentiator is the development of a causal understanding of microbial interactions powerful enough to allow the rational construction of designer functional consortia.

One of the most important targets for bio-based technologies is the crop inputs space. The company’s first products seek to reduce the enormous waste in agricultural products and specifically specialty crops due to crop loss to fungal pests in the field and post-harvest. There is significant need for new biological, organic, safe biopesticides for crops as current chemical products have many challenges, such as regulatory burden for growers and safety concerns of consumers. Boost announced a partnership with IFF’s Health & Biosciences division (until recently, owned by DuPont) to develop and commercialize the lead biofungicide. Via this agreement, Boost is bringing to bear world-leading capabilities in process-development and manufacturing.

Boost also announced a Joint Development Agreement with Yara International to better mobilize phosphate for uptake by plants; phosphate is one of the key nutrients that farmers feed plants as fertilizer. In the $50 billion phosphate fertilizer industry, a significant amount of the phosphate that farmers apply changes in chemical form and becomes unavailable to the plant highlighting the formidable potential of Boost Biomes’ technology and the incredible size of its total addressable market in crop protection, crop nutrition and food safety. Boost is uniquely positioned at the leading edge of a quickly expanding field looking to tap into the value offered by understanding and engineering microbiomes.


The Role: Strategy & Corporate Development Lead

Working closely with the CEO, the Head of Business Development and the leadership team, the Strategy & Corporate Development Lead will support key initiatives in corporate and business development. You will be responsible for critical research, organization and presentation of findings to enable the company’s decision-making process and prioritize lucrative, game-changing business opportunities. This is a unique, hybrid role that combines crop agricultural experience with business savvy and spreadsheet finesse. You must have hands on experience with crop inputs in the field, knowledge of pathogens and pests, and the ability to evaluate each opportunity in a form that provides clear analysis and rationale for recommendations.

Position Description

·      Provide critical research, economic analysis, and insights for Corporate and Business Development, such as:

o   Analysis of disease/pest targets, by crop, and by geographic region, with accompanying landscape and regulatory analyses, that enable go/no-go decisions for Boost to pursue product concepts into development / to be added to our discovery pipeline

o   Research and quantification of benefits and attractiveness from products or product concepts through to support sales

o   Ongoing quantitative analysis of sustainability trends, carbon capture and other metrics and aspects of ESG to add value to Boost

  • Ensure that the company is up-to-date on relevant trends in the agricultural chemicals, biopesticide and agtech space

o   Competitive biological & other natural products (fungicidal, bactericidal, PGR, etc.)

o   Competitive synthetic fungicide products

o   Key crop input players

o   New/innovative technologies

o   Trends specific to food preservation, spoilage, and other food applications

  • In conjunction with the head of Business Development, identify opportunities for product innovation in-line with corporate goals (identify gaps for key industry players and other applications that leverage current lead candidates (in Food and Ag verticals, and outside of agriculture)
  • Foster customer relationships (ag chem companies, distributors, PCAs, growers, farmers, universities etc.) and constantly seek and use stakeholders’ feedback to guide product refinements and ongoing development
  • Create or update presentations, flyers and other promotional documents such as pitch decks for audiences that include customers, existing and potential partners, and the investor community
  • Keep track of the competitive landscape, evaluate new business opportunities, ideas, markets and technologies to support Boost Biomes’ corporate development initiatives
  • Prospect, analyze and solicit new business development collaborations via relevant databases, conferences, trade shows, online industry news, professional network and other relevant sources; prioritize among opportunities via quantitative assessments of the opportunities
  • Develop and deliver impactful presentations to key internal and external prospects and stakeholders that successfully persuade the target audience in supporting corporate goals
  • Collect, analyze and transmit information regarding market evolution, competitors and technology trends
  • Prospect and attend conferences related to Boost’s business needs


What You Bring
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Agronomy, Plant Science, Plant Pathology, Plant Physiology, Marketing or related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in agriculture in crop protection and crop nutrition
  • Direct relevant experience in product development
  • Working directly with distributors and growers, or working for a crop input company with direct exposure to the crop protection industry
  • Strong quantitative skills; spreadsheet expert; demonstrated ability to research, find, quantify and integrate hard-to-find data into analyses
  • Expertise in financial modeling, FP&A, valuation, and modeling non-financial processes to evaluate opportunities and enable data-driven decision-making
  • Existing expertise in the AgTech/Biologicals space with a current professional network
  • High proficiency in the use of PowerPoint and Excel
  • Exceptionally resourceful
Preferred Skills
  • MBA Degree
  • PCA, CCA or similar training
  • Experience with ESG via training or specific work experience
  • Working knowledge of regulatory, and scientific affairs as it relates to the agrochemical industry
  • On-farm experience
  • Experience working in food safety and shelf-life extension
