Job Description

We're growing our DevOps team. Over the last few years we have had massive user growth which is continuing to accelerate and our platform has scaled well and it's time to grow our DevOps team. This is a great opportunity to work with the latest best practices in an engineering team that is highly supportive of doing things the right way.
At Wonolo, our mission is to make work flexible and fulfilling for everyone. Everyday, we are creating opportunities for people to make extra income, learn new skills, and change their lives. At the same time, we are saving companies money by efficiently connecting them with talented people and redesigning the recruitment process for many industries.

What you'll do:

    • Help Wonolo scale the foundation of a platform that allows businesses to fill their on-demand staffing needs within minutes, providing flexible and on-demand job opportunities for job seekers.
    • Establish a standard of high availability and reliability for Wonolo’s production systems.
    • Influence the direction of our technical roadmap.
    • Create and administer infrastructure -- cloud services, hosts, monitoring tools -- for highly reliable and scalable web applications and data stores.
    • Build automated tooling to configure and maintain our systems and services.
    • Identify and solve issues in our stack.
    • Work closely with your peers in engineering.
    • Participate in an on-call rotation.

Projects you might work on:

    • Implementing spot autoscaling for our Nomad hosts.
    • Improving our deploy pipelines.
    • Testing our cloud infrastructure with InSpec.
    • Designing our CDN strategy.
    • Investigating Prometheus and Thanos.

Who you are:

    • You have experience in DevOps or Site Reliability for a company with fast-paced growth.
    • You are knowledgeable in configuration management with a framework such as Chef, Puppet or Ansible (we use Chef).
    • You're comfortable with AWS, UNIX/Linux (we use Ubuntu), and have experience with database administration (we use Postgres and Redis).
    • You’re experienced in continuous integration practices & tools (Jenkins, Travis CI, Teamcity, CircleCI, Buildkite etc).
    • You are proficient with one or more programming languages like Ruby, Python or Go.
    • Your documentation, collaboration, and verbal communication skills are excellent.
    • You are inclined to automate, but can discern when automation isn't the best solution and present alternatives.
    • You've worked with continuous integration and deployment systems, and have ideas about how to build and improve those systems.
    • You strongly believe in the importance of security, and enjoy the idea of partnering with engineering to ensure the integrity of our customers' data.
    • You have productive habits, healthy process awareness, and good teamwork skills and instincts.
    • You’re curious in nature, browse HN, star/fork/contribute on Github and keep yourself busy learning every week.
    • You don’t believe in YAGNI but understand the tradeoffs when it comes to technical debt.

Technologies we use and those we are exploring:

    • AWS (EC2, Aurora Postgres, KMS, SSM, SNS, Route53 etc).
    • Chef, Test-Kitchen, InSpec.
    • Docker
    • Quay, Artifactory, Harbor.
    • Buildkite
    • Hashicorp (Consul, Nomad, Terraform, Vault).
    • Sensu, Prometheus, Grafana.
    • Fabio, nginx, Envoy.

Our interview process:

    • Technical phone screen: We want to hear about your engineering stories, opinions of technologies…
    • … but we’ll throw couple curve balls
    • Short take-home exercise (we promise):
    • Your choice of language (but Smalltalk is probably not the right choice).
    • Show us your craft. Submitting something you're proud of is far more important than any amount of time spent or not spent on the challenge.
    • Remote interview: We’ll review your take-home exercise and we’ll build on it.
    • Domain knowledge - addressing DevOps-related projects and problem-solving.
    • Systems Design - thinking of architectural decisions at a high level.

Benefits and perks:

    • The opportunity for growth in a mission-driven and well-funded start-up
    • Competitive salary, meaningful equity, and company bonus
    • We cover 100% insurance (medical/dental/vision) premiums
    • We encourage a healthy work-life balance and offer flexible schedules, an open vacation policy, and the ability to work remotely (no more commutes)!
    • Generous parental leave plan
    • Cell phone reimbursement and laptop
    • Team outings, virtual happy hours, company off-sites, and more!
