As a Senior Consumable/Cartidge Design Engineer, you will drive the design and fabrication of new Opto-Electro-Positioning (OEP) microfluidic consumables. Berkeley Lights (BLI) OEP consumables are single-use microfluidic chips with a proprietary semiconductor substrate that enables the manipulation of biological cells using optically actuated dielectrophoresis. Automated biological workflows are run on OEP consumables using BLI instruments for applications such as: cell line development, antibody discovery, synthetic biology, and cellular therapeutics. You will be responsible for the design of all microfluidic layouts for OEP consumables and fluidic simulations. You will also drive next-generation fabrication and assembly processes for OEP consumables, such as photolithography and bonding, as we expand and scale our products. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of microfluidics and have experience with semiconductor fabrication processes. The Sr. Consumable/Cartridge Design Engineer will work closely with multi-disciplinary internal teams and suppliers to drive R&D and deliver new OEP consumables. You will specifically be responsible for the design of cartridges to automate T cell workflows for cell therapy applications.

Responsibilities

    • Drive the design of all new OEP consumables for R&D and to meet our product roadmap in collaboration with internal teams.
    • Draft new microfluidic layouts for photomask generation using CAD software and transfer the new designs to suppliers for tape-out. Update existing layouts to improve manufacturability and yield as needed.
    • Perform fluid dynamics simulations to inform microfluidic designs and on-chip experiments when appropriate.
    • Collaborate with suppliers and the Consumables team to have new designs fabricated and assembled.
    • Characterize and test new OEP consumables once they are assembled, which will occasionally require running functional tests on BLI platforms using relevant workflows.
    • Maintain an up-to-date set of OEP consumable design rules using your in-depth understanding of microfluidic phenomena and in accordance with the limits of our chip fabrication and assembly processes.
    • Conduct feasibility studies for new consumable designs and fabrication processes in the laboratory and in local cleanroom facilities.
    • Support the failure analysis of OEP consumables that do not meet performance and reliability specifications. This includes working with external laboratories to complete the appropriate analyses.
    • Manage the repository of photomask layouts and OEP consumable design drawings in BLI’s document control system.

Skills and Experience

    • Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Bioengineering, or related discipline. An excellent academic record is a strong plus.
    • 2+ years of experience designing and developing microfluidic devices for life sciences.
    • A fundamental understanding of microfluidic physical and chemical phenomena.
    • Experience with the design, fabrication, and testing of microfluidic devices.
    • Hands-on experience with semiconductor fabrication techniques – particularly patterning polymers using photolithography. Experience working in a semiconductor fabrication cleanroom is a plus.
    • Proficiency with CAD software to generate photomask layouts. Experience with CFD tools such as COMSOL to conduct simulations.
    • Knowledge of characterization techniques for microfluidic devices and semiconductors. Experience with failure analysis is a plus.
    • Technology transfer and supplier management experience, i.e., transferring designs and processes from R&D to production facilities at suppliers.
    • Data-driven, proficient with design of experiments (DOE), statistical analysis, statistical process control (SPC), failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), and structured problem solving.
    • Ability to thrive in a start-up company with demanding schedules and deliverables.
    • Outstanding collaborative, interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to clearly articulate ideas, problems, and solutions within a highly interdisciplinary environment.
    • Travel may be required for supplier visits (<10%).
