About the Role:

We are currently recruiting a highly motivated and independent  Associate Scientist/Scientist to join our team. We are looking to expand our research efforts and advance our lead assets into the preclinical evaluations. This laboratory-based position will be responsible for the development of in vitro cell-based assays, molecular cloning, and in vivo analysis to aid in the optimization of novel gene therapies for age-related macular degeneration.

The successful applicant will collaborate with retinal biologists, molecular biologists, and other external scientists in academia and Contract Research Organizations to advance our pipeline. This position has tremendous room for growth and opportunities across multiple areas of R&D, including gene therapy, pharmacology, translational biology, in addition to collaborative opportunities with external CROs.

Specific Job Responsibilities will include:

  • Independently design and execute experiments to produce reliable and reproducible results to inform project critical decisions.
  • Collaborate with team members and external partners to run pre-clinical in vivo evaluation of AAV in different animal models.
  • Independently and appropriately analyze data, interpret results, and brainstorm solutions to further project objectives.
  • Provide oversight and management of junior team members and external CRO relationships.
  • Build and evaluate candidate AAV gene therapy vectors in vitro using cell-based models for nomination for in vivo evaluation
  • Ability to assist with analysis of in vivo preclinical animal studies, experience with IHC, ELISA and RT-qPCR are highly valuable
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging technologies and scientific approaches in the gene therapy area, particularly with regard to AAV
  • Prepare summaries of data and present internally to colleagues and leadership
  • Develop and follow protocols, diligently document experimental data in electronic lab notebooks, and authorize scientific reports for internal documentation or regulatory submissions
  • Actively support a culture of innovation, learning, respect, and trust

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in the life sciences with 3+ years of research experience, preferably related to drug discovery. Prior industry experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency in vector design, cloning, transfection, viral transduction, cell culturing, cell imaging, nucleic acid sequencing, immunohistochemistry and qPCR/ddPCR techniques.
  • Proven experience in developing cell-based models using a variety of molecular, biochemical, immunological, and/or imaging-based endpoints.
  • Independent and critical thinker, multi-tasker, and problem solver with strong verbal and written communication skills, and a team-first mindset
