About UserTesting

UserTesting is an on-demand human insight platform that quickly gives companies a first-person understanding of how their target audience behaves throughout any experience and why.

Job Description

UserTesting is looking for a hands-on senior DevOps engineer who can take us beyond our monolith and into a SOA-based architecture with best-in-class automated infrastructure as we expand internationally.

UserTesting Engineering prides itself on having built a culture focused on kindness and putting customers first. As a senior member of our Ops & Infrastructure team, you will exercise these values on a daily basis, working to promote best practices and modern tooling among new service owners, and providing vital support to the operationalization of our legacy platform. You will also work closely with our Office of Information Security, ensuring that new and existing projects meet our growing compliance requirements.

UserTesting is at a powerful growth phase, having hit $100MM ARR and begun expanding into EMEA with a new office and acquisitions. This is an opportunity for a skilled DevOps engineer to help structure an architecture and build structure to scale with us internationally to $250MM and beyond.

About UserTesting:

What makes the difference between a product that's engaging, compelling, and easy to use and one that's frustrating, broken, and complicated? The answer is user experience. Here at UserTesting, our mission is to help our customers create great experiences. We enable every organization to deliver the best customer experience powered by human insight.

UserTesting will continuously invest in your education with a reserved and generous budget and the tools necessary to do the job the right way. We also provide unlimited paid time off.

About the Ops & Infrastructure Team:

The Ops & Infrastructure Team is part of the larger Platform Group, which builds infrastructure and guides architecture across the UserTesting organization.

The team is distributed across multiple locations and time zones, so we work to find a healthy balance of asynchronous communication with Slack and synchronous meetings on Zoom.

A day in the life of a senior Ops & Infrastructure member may look like the following:

  • Advising new service owners on productionalization requirements
  • Reviewing incoming tickets in Jira and prioritizing them for the team
  • Developing and executing on a plan to move hand-built cloud resources to Infrastructure as Code
  • Handling a request to update an expiring certificate or modify networking configurations
  • Pairing with a team member to debug issues with our custom ECS orchestration tool
  • Creating and calibrating metrics, alarms and monitoring solutions for the platform
  • Investigating and resolving a discovered security vulnerability
  • Building out shared tooling for our next phase of decentralized CI/CD

The Opportunity:

UserTesting is a market leader, with demonstrated success and a decade of user testing data and processes ripe to be integrated into well-known enterprise systems and leaders in the industry. Your work will underlie our long-term growth and unlock the potential of the rest of the department by enabling squads to build into an SOA architecture with off-the-rack starting points for their services, state-of-the-art monitoring and logging, and sensible guardrails built in from the start.

The overarching themes for the next 12 months are:

  1. Automate for rapid growth as we continue to develop our SOA strategy.
  2. Standardize, structure, and monitor infrastructure.
  3. Build the DevOps ‘brand’ on the team and throughout an organization eager for it.
  4. Empower new service owners, and scale your impact beyond the product and engineering organization, by positioning your squad as UserTesting’s Cloud Center of Excellence.

What you will have ownership for delivering:

  • Build a cloud-agnostic Infrastructure-As-Code approach structure as we expand internationally.
  • Develop reference implementations for deployment of new services in collaboration across the department in a ‘distributed devops’ model.

  • Design our vision for SOA development in close concert with our Internal Tools team
  • Streamline software development by implementing reusable tooling for CI/CD pipelines and automating manual processes and associated developer tooling
  • Support, troubleshoot, monitor and optimize production systems
  • Identify network and application performance bottlenecks and propose solutions.

  • Solidifying best practices for security as we maintain SOC2v2 compliance drive for additional certifications
  • Implement models for tracking cost across teams, and developing plans for driving cost out of cloud vendors

What We’re Looking For:

  • Excellent communication, documentation, and organization skills.
  • Someone who understands developers and can make them successful
  • Ability to use a wide variety of open source technologies and cloud services (experience with AWS is required).

  • Deep understanding of networking, web infrastructure/technology, security group configuration, SSL certificates.

  • Knowledge of best practices in an always-up, always-available SaaS environment.

  • Experience with SQL and MySQL (NoSQL experience or other databases are a plus).

  • Experience orchestrating cloud resources with Terraform and potentially AWS CloudFormation, Azure ARM
  • Docker / container orchestration experience
  • Ruby or Python experience is a bonus
