Job Description
The Company You’ll Join
At Carta we create owners and make private markets liquid.
We live in a world where some people live on the equity stack and enjoy exponential wealth growth and preferential tax treatment; others live on the debt stack and may work their entire lives for a company and retire only with the cash they’ve managed to save from their paychecks. Our contribution to solving the wealth inequality problem is moving people from the debt stack (payroll) to the equity stack. By making it as easy to issue equity to employees as it is to put them on payroll, we can create more owners.
At Carta, we are helpful, transparent, fair, and kind. We are relentless executors, unconventional thinkers, and masters of our craft.

The Team You’ll Work With
You will be joining our newest vertical at Carta called CartaX. While Carta is creating more owners, the CartaX team is building the platform to unlock the value of ownership. Our team is building a greenfield marketplace that allows employees, ex-employees, and early investors of pre-IPO companies to trade their shares in a competitive auction. CartaX is the world’s first vertically integrated financial marketplace in the private markets.
The Problems You’ll Solve
You’ll be leading the engineering team for an entire business unit at Carta to build and scale the world’s first vertically integrated financial marketplace for private securities, CartaX. This is an opportunity to provide unmistakable value to human beings by giving organizations the ability to recognize and reward their people. You’ll be creating opportunities to help build wealth and provide that access to everyone outside of just the elite.
The CartaX team and business spans the globe, so you will have the unique opportunity to inspire change, elicit feedback, and foster debate across a diverse set of backgrounds and perspectives. You will be responsible for forming the technical vision for the platform and helping to bring it to fruition.
You will:
- Iterate on the architecture for CartaX to deliver a resilient, redundant, scalable, and performant brokerage platform and marketplace that operates globally in the cloud
- Explore trading new and unique asset types outside of traditional equities on CartaX
- Elevate the CartaX engineering culture - optimize for curiosity, candor, collaboration, and rigor
- Understand and incorporate the business needs into the technical architecture of CartaX
Attract and retain strong engineering talent and cultivate the engineers within the organization
About You
You’re an engineering leader who has deep experience in either financial services or web-based architecture, but preferably both. You have led teams to build systems from the ground up. A person that is willing to get into the technical and business details, but is also comfortable distilling the platform or deliverables to the c-suite. You’re someone that has demonstrated a command of the business side of the technology they have built.
You will step into a technical decision to drive an outcome - not necessarily the outcome you desired from the start but reasoning about the best outcome for the matter at hand with the team so everyone learns together. You are someone with an aptitude to elicit a reaction from the team to engage them in technical debates. A person that is willing to cultivate talent, focuses on learning, and grows the team organically. You are a leader that is willing and able to build relationships across the organization, to engage the other engineering teams on our progress, problems, or interesting matters at hand, and to represent CartaX to the technical community.
We are an equal opportunity employer and are committed to providing a positive interview experience for every candidate.
