About Healx

Healx is an AI-powered and patient-inspired technology company, accelerating the discovery and development of rare disease treatments.

Our AI drug discovery platform leverages public and proprietary biomedical data and features the world’s leading knowledge graph for rare diseases.

Job Description

Healx is an AI-powered, patient-inspired tech company, accelerating the discovery and development of treatments for rare diseases. There are 7,000 known rare diseases that affect 400 million people across the globe but only 5% of those conditions have approved treatments. Our mission is to discover and develop novel treatments for rare disease patients at scale through a combination of AI technology, drug discovery expertise and patient insight. Our innovative approach aims to identify existing drugs that may be repurposed and combined to treat rare diseases, meaning treatments can be found more quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively than traditional drug discovery methods allow.

Founded in 2014 in Cambridge, UK, by Dr Tim Guilliams, a Biochemical Engineer and tech entrepreneur, and Dr David Brown, co-inventor of Viagra and former Global Head of Drug Discovery at Roche. In 2019, Healx raised $56 million in Series B funding. In 2019, the company was listed in Tech Nation’s Future Fifty cohort and, in 2020, Healx won 5 prizes at the CogX Awards including Grand Jury Prize and Best AI Product and was listed in CB Insights Digital 150.

The Drug Discovery Scientist (DMPK) role will join our Preclinical Team and will use their DMPK skills to help prioritise drug repurposing opportunities identified using the output from Healx Drug-Disease matching algorithms and progressing selected drugs through preclinical testing ensuring the data supports a clinical trial in rare diseases. They require an ability to understand how DMPK/drug pharmacology can influence disease biology, excellent communication, organisational skills and experience or an interest  in project leadership. We are looking for a new team member to bring new skills and add a diversity of experience to the current team.

Guide projects in their translation through preclinical stages, providing in vivo study design, PK assessment, PK/PD  and first in human dose prediction.
Oversee external DMPK aspects (CRO and Disease groups) during the preclinical testing phase
Act as the DMPK subject matter expert for projects, providing and communicating data to cross functional teams to help progress the most suitable candidates
Experience of modelling and simulation of human dose predictions (WinNonlin or similar)
Work with curators, bioinformaticians and software engineers to develop DMPK tools alongside Healx’s algorithmic repurposing methods
Write summary reports for internal and partnered projects, including chemical, biochemical, pharmacological, pharmaceutical, pharmacokinetic and medical properties to justify the selection of candidate drugs
Generate and maintain long term relationships with Healx partners

Personal Characteristics

Passion; care deeply about Healx’s aims for improving the lives of rare disease patients and how your work will help us
Integrity; live by our company values
    Delivers reliably against agreed objectives
Able to rapidly see the ‘big picture’ of company objectives and priorities
Build great relationships; great communication and collaboration is the key to getting things done
Self-Improver; stay professionally relevant, network, enjoy learning and set high standards for yourself and others
Resilience; stay focussed and motivated, especially when things get tough
Self-Awareness; understand how others perceive you; know your strengths and know your weaknesses
Love feedback; understand that feedback is a vital part of making progress

Qualification and Experiences

University Degree (with at least a 2:1) and postgraduate MSC/PhD degree in Pharmacology/DMPK/Medicinal Chemistry or a related discipline
Experience in drug discovery and an understanding of the drug discovery process from project start to clinical trials
Knowledge of disease biology, drug pharmacology and what constitutes ‘drug-like properties’ for molecules for each individual disease
Track record of using DMPK data and analysis to progress drug discovery projects
Experience of human dose prediction software (Win/Nonlin or similar)
Experience of pre-clinical study design and in managing CROs
Proven interest or enthusiasm in use of computational chemistry/biology/AI in drug discovery

Flexible working

A diverse team means diverse working styles and circumstances, so flexibility is really important to us. We have a relaxed working environment in our main Cambridge office with flexible hours and remote working options to help you work in a way that is best for you.
