Job Description

Job Summary

Support from Recruiting Agencies not required at this time

We have an exciting new opportunity for a skilled and motivated Research Scientist or Senior Scientist to join our Discovery Pharmacology team and establish internal surface plasmon resonance (SPR) assays. The successful applicant will have prior hands-on experience of SPR assay development and screening in an industry setting, preferably using a Biacore. You will enjoy a varied and rewarding role, developing and running a range of in vitro assays to characterise target proteins and screen novel peptides identified by Bicycle’s unique phage display platform. You will be joining an established and expanding biology team, supporting multiple programs, with an internal focus on immuno-oncology as well as collaborations with external partners.

You will be predominantly lab-based and responsible for establishing and optimising SPR assays, generating and interpreting biophysical assay data to progress multiple drug-discovery programmes across a diverse range of therapeutic areas. The applicant should be comfortable with a fast-paced, dynamic working environment and hold excellent communication skills to facilitate the necessary close interactions with the internal biology and chemistry teams as well as external partners.

Key Responsibilities
  • Act as super-user of internal Biacore T200 machine, overseeing training and maintenance
  • Establish and optimise assay conditions for biophysical assays for internal use and/or transfer to external partners
  • Use SPR to generate robust and reproducible affinity and kinetic data pertaining to Bicyclic peptides, within a matrixed drug discovery team to agreed timelines, to drive internal project progression and for inclusion in patents/publications
  • Analyse and critically interpret biophysical assay data generated in-house and externally, to characterise the pharmacology and mechanism of action of Bicycles and to improve assay quality
  • Establish and run biophysical assays to generate QC data for target proteins to be used in phage selection campaigns
  • Problem-solve, troubleshoot and identify potential next steps, improvements and alternative methodologies
  • Design, validate and develop biophysical assays in new ways to increase throughput or expand the team’s capabilities
  • Record experiments accurately and diligently in electronic lab books and databases
  • Work to existing SOPs and risk assessments and contribute to generating new ones as appropriate
  • Present the results of independently conducted research confidently and concisely in oral or written form, to internal and external teams
Key Skills and Competencies

Essential Skills and Competencies:

  • BSc or PhD in a relevant field plus prior experience from at least one role in a pharmaceutical or biotech setting
  • Previous experience in running and interpreting binding data from SPR assays, preferably using peptides or small molecules, a Biacore T200 machine and associated software
  • Strong team-work and interpersonal skills. Confident and experienced in presenting to senior management
  • Good computing skills in basic MS Office suite software and statistical analysis packages
  • Diligent in documenting work and adherent to data integrity requirements

Desirable Capabilities:

  • Experience with other biophysical assay platforms such as BLI
  • Experience with small molecule drug discovery projects and a robust understanding of the wider drug discovery process
  • Practical knowledge of Health and Safety legislation and procedure
  • Experience in using data analysis software packages, databases and ELNs e.g. Dotmatics and GraphPad Prism
  • An understanding of phage display or other display technologies
