About Public

Public is a new kind of brokerage that makes it possible to buy any public stock with any amount of money.

Job Description

About us: is an investing app that makes the stock market social. By building a transparent community of investors and offering fractional shares of thousands of publicly-traded companies, we’re making the stock market inclusive, educational, and fun.

We’re in hyper-growth mode after announcing our Series C funding round, led once-again by Accel, Greycroft (the original investors in Venmo) and Lakestar as well as Will Smith (Dreamers VC), Tony Hawk, The Chainsmokers’ Mantis VC; NFL star J.J. Watt, Scott Galloway, Sophia Amoruso, and Shari Redstone’s Advancit Capital.

With interest in the stock market surging among a new generation of investors, our community is growing rapidly. To support our ambitious goals, our team is growing and we’re looking for sharp, enthusiastic people who believe in our mission to fundamentally change the way people invest.

What you’ll do:

You’ll be the first internal counsel at Public, reporting to the COO. As such, you will be a leader in the organization and you will be responsible for managing all day-to-day legal requirements for the business and establishing policies and processes that enable sound legal operations for the business. For example, you’ll be the owner of all relevant customer agreements and responsible for making sure those documents meet the high bar for quality that we hold all elements of the Public product. And you will also work directly with product and compliance teams to ensure that we are managing our legal risk in existing and new products. Overall, you will be a leader in the organization and will be expected to find ways within the legal function (and sometimes outside of it!) to help grow the business.

What we’re looking for:

  • J.D. degree from an ABA accredited law school (or foreign equivalent)
  • Membership in at least 1 U.S. State Bar, with good standing
  • 6+ years of legal practice, including extensive business & product counseling experience
  • Experience advising business and product teams on launching new products and features
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Problem solver and independent operator
  • Ability to be player coach
  • Comfortable with ambiguity
  • Deeply interested in markets & investing (especially personally!)
  • Active member (sign up today!)

Bonus Points:

  • Experience working in fast-paced dynamic environments (e.g., technology companies and startups)
  • Experience in broker-dealer or securities law

  • Be part of a company with a real mission you can be proud of
  • We are growing rapidly, but are still at a size where you will learn A LOT. This role can be a catalyst to grow your skills and experience
  • We offer great health care plans and pay the full premium for you and your family including medical, dental, and vision
  • Generous PTO and sick leave
  • Discounted fitness memberships
  • 401k with 4% company match after 3 months of employment
  • Your choice of gear - from laptop to desk, we got you covered
