So the question is, if nature is capable of manufacturing the products we need in a scalable way, why aren’t we doing more of this? Well, the answer is that with the solutions available today, it is hard. It takes a long time to find the right cell for a specific job, costs lots of money, and if you have picked a suboptimal cell line, has a very low process yield. Berkeley Lights has the complete solution to find the best cells by functionally screening and recovering individual cells for antibody discovery, cell line development, T cell analysis, and synthetic biology. Our proprietary technology and Beacon® and LightningTM systems accelerate the rate researchers can discover and develop cell-based products in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the cost of conventional, legacy research methods. Using our tools and solutions, scientists can find the best cells, the first time they look.

Berkeley Lights is recruiting a Cell Biologist to join our R&D Life Sciences team to work in collaboration with instrument and software engineers as we scale down biology workflows to the single cell level using our platforms to achieve high throughput, automated solutions for assay development. The candidate will work closely with our research and applications development teams to build upon our current capabilities and transition biology workflows to the nanoscale.   The ideal candidate will have strong troubleshooting skills, enjoy being at the bench and creating new reagents assays and protocols.  As well as having the ability to collaborate on inventing and quickly diverging from established protocols to generate iterative, novel solutions to complex and fun challenges.  The number one requirement for this position is that you’re a stellar molecular biologist who enjoys new challenges at the bench.


    • Work within the R&D team to design, develop and implement novel cell-based assays and analysis on the Berkeley Lights platforms.
    • Design and generate cell biology tools to support development of new assays and reagents
    • Generate data using existing or novel single cell assays on Berkeley Lights technology to improve product development pipelines
    • Work with primary cell populations to understand cell signaling and developmental pathways at the single-cell level.
    • Work closely with a diverse team of biologists, bioinformaticians, engineers to adapt existing cell-based  biological assays to the single cell level.
    • Innovate new and creative solutions to working at the single cell level.
    • Present data internally to development teams, management and executives to inform and drive new product development.

Skills & Qualifications

    • A Ph.D. with 1+ years of additional experience in cell biology, immunology, molecular biology, genetics or a related field of research in an academic or industry setting. 
    • Strong hands-on experience with cell biology tools and concepts, such as: multicolor flow cytometry, fluorescent microscopy, MACS, ELISA, IHC.
    • Familiarity with cell/tissue culture, cell-based functional assays, cell line engineering, fluorescent reporter cell generation, receptor/ligand binding assays, protein expression and microscopy platforms, cell engineering.
    • Excellent collaboration, interpersonal, and communication skills to clearly articulate ideas, problems, and solutions.
    • Ability to go “off-protocol” and invent, optimize and develop new approaches.

Additional Desired Skills & Qualifications

    • Skilled problem solver with the ability to troubleshoot existing protocols as well as develop new protocols and kits.
    • Comfortable learning and working with new technology and helping provide solutions outside of your area of expertise
    • A working knowledge of antibody discovery, antibody therapeutics or cell line development
    • Quickly learn new concepts and protocols from primary literature and develop new expertise in a short amount of time
    • Attention to details, well organized record keeping of experimental data
    • Ability to work in high pace environment, with rapid experimental design iterations and short timelines
    • A team first attitude and ability to function well in a matrixed organization and ability coordinate experimental workflows between diverse groups of scientists and engineers
    • Proficient data analysis skills; experience with data-mining software (e.g. Tableau, Spotfire) is desired.
