About the Role

You will research and implement advanced signal processing algorithms for Nuro’s 77-GHz radars to extract information about the robot’s surrounding environment. You’ll prototype state-of-the-art automotive radar algorithms, and develop novel ones specifically suited for Nuro’s autonomous robot needs. You’ll analyze and fine tune algorithms and implementations, and make them really work for a large fleet in a wide variety of driving conditions.

About the Work

  • Design and validate signal processing algorithms for detection, tracking, RF calibration, parameter estimation, and interference mitigation
  • Analyze algorithmic complexity, optimize for memory and processor requirements
  • Tune those algorithms to make good tradeoffs between precision and recall
  • Develop evaluation methods to characterize the efficacy of the DSP algorithms for the entire Nuro fleet in multiple-city operations, identify performance bottlenecks and debug down root causes
  • Collaborate in the antenna design process from spec to testing, to ensure the radars get the data needed for your algorithms
  • Work with embedded software engineers to implement the DSP algorithms in hardware accelerators
  • Work with robot perception engineers to make the best use of radar data in tracking and sensor fusion

About You

  • Masters or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Experimental Physics, Math, or a closely related field
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • DSP and numerical analysis, e.g. fourier transforms, digital filters, matrix algorithms, optimization
  • Deep knowledge of radar algorithms, e.g. phased array antenna designs, beamforming algorithms, MIMO radar multiplexing algorithms, CFAR, parametric spectral analysis
  • Comfortable researching and developing novel algorithms for non-traditional radar operating conditions  
  • Experience with rapid numerical prototyping in Matlab or python
  • Have the independence and grit to investigate and debug signal processing artifacts due to RF hardware or algorithmic root causes.
  • Can write clear, complete, and useful documentation
  • Enjoy taking initiative and working with multidisciplinary teams

Bonus Point

  • Experience with optimization algorithms
  • Experience with probabilistic estimation algorithms
  • Proficiency in C or C++
  • Experience with multiple target tracking algorithms
  • Experience with hardware/software development and product life cycle
  • Read and understand PCB schematic and layout documents
