What does the Brand team look like? 

We’re a small but mighty in-house team of designers and writers. As a key support team within Bench, we’re constantly working to deliver stellar assets that look and sound great, but also perform really, really well. 

We operate through “elastic bandwidth.” While we have a Senior Designer and Copywriter in-house, we rely heavily on a network of trusted contractors to help us support teams across Bench as needs arise. 

We’re not cogs in a machine accepting tickets and churning out assets. We constantly meet with critical stakeholders across Bench to learn what we need to learn, help improve briefs, and create a shared sense of investment about every project we tackle. “Staying in our lane” isn’t our thing—if there’s an area of the business where we feel we can make real, powerful contributions, we do it. 

What you’ll be getting up to: 

  • Own an autonomous business unit with independent P&L responsibility.
  • Be accountable for the development of insanely great Brand assets that arrive on-time and on-budget. 
  • Hire, lead, and mentor a team of in-house creatives. 
  • Improve and iterate on existing Brand standards and approaches through testing and collaboration with neighbouring business units. 
  • Work closely with critical Paid, Inbound, and Customer Marketing teams to understand marketing requirements, elevate briefs, and to create efficient project plans. 
  • Manage and organize in-house and external Brand team members to create high-quality video, design, and written assets. 
  • Lead the ideation, art direction, and design of projects from start to finish to create compelling experiences across digital, video, social, advertising, email, and other touchpoints.
  • Partner with marketing stakeholders and agencies to review creative effectiveness, test results, and lead the team to iterate and improve based on data.

What I am looking for

As our Creative Director, you will oversee all creative aspects of Bench’s brand, elevating the brand to the highest standard while leading a well-established, talented team of in-house creatives. As a hands-on leader, you will drive the creative strategy and execution across all brand and marketing projects for all channels. You’ll be responsible for reviewing briefs, and helping stakeholders turn an “okay brief” into a hard-hitting, game-changing one. You’ll monitor team bandwidth and ensure that the right things are getting worked on each week, delegating tasks to our in-house and contracting team. 

  • You have a (strong) shared sense of purpose: We are here to make a profound difference in the lives of 1 million people and entrepreneurs and solve this universal problem: they need to understand their financials, and we’ll do that by taking bookkeeping off their hands so they can focus on what matters, changing the world. I need the creative brain that is going to help us do just that. We’re united behind this mission, and since you’ll be the conduit to the business’ creativity, it's crucial that you buy into it.  
  • You have great project management knowledge: External agencies bill by the hour; they have to operate efficiently to make a profit. But in-house creative agencies have no such constraints. So I’ll want you to prioritize operational excellence when building your team. 
  • You can be scrappy, take risks, but you also have exceptionally high standards: I don’t want you to fall in the trap of creating “safe” collateral instead of pushing the boundaries. Nothing should be ordinary at Bench. I want you to hire team members that are willing to take risks. Keep challenging their limits to ensure that no complacency creeps in. 
  • You have an innovation-first approach. You are - pardon the cliche - an "outside the box" thinker. Any creative exercise isn't just a one-time process for you, but a way to approach all problems, in work and in life.
  • You obsess with the user experience: designing not for ourselves but for real people with real needs. We hold ourselves to high standards, pushing boundaries to design new things that feel intuitive.
  • You can collaborate and have exceptional listening skills. You can listen - broadly and deeply - to customers and coworkers alike. You are able to work across teams to unlock new ideas and bring them to life. You can build strong relationships, and you’re able to accept feedback, criticism and be open to new ideas or questions from anyone! Default open!
  • You can keep it human: You practice empathy and you understand that no one is perfect. You embrace challenging conversations and you know that in fact, these are valuable. You know that these are all part of being human, and working at Bench.

To be successful in the role, you’ll need to have: 

  • 5+ years of relevant work in a creative field with at least a few years of those in B2B software and/or digital marketing 
  • 2+ years experience hiring and leading people. 
  • 2+ years experience with managing projects and developing creative briefs. 
  • A solid understanding of online marketing, A/B testing, and asset optimization.
  • A compelling creative portfolio of work that demonstrates experience in web, digital advertising, social, sales support, and campaigns
  • A proven track record of creating best-in-class creative content and have led teams in doing the same. 
  • Familiarity with the tools used here at Bench, including GSuite, Contentful, Jira, Adobe Illustrator, Sketch, Zeplin.
  • The ability to view marketing data and objectives as a frame for creativity, and not a hindrance—you view Brand as a critical component of marketing, and you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty.

  • A network of creatives / contractors that you can start leveraging right away.  
  • You have done this before. You have built an in-house creative agency or worked at a creative agency.
  • A desire to continue to learn, with a curiosity and passion for art, design, digital, and technology
  • A well-developed equity lens: You actively engage in leadership of teams and of strategic-level work with an equity lens and an eye for inclusivity. You don’t just accept equitable practices, you model and advocate for them on your teams and in your work.

  • Our office has gone fully remote! We’ll set you up with everything you need to work from home, from day one. Although you'll need to be able to travel to Vancouver regularly once it’s possible to do so.
