About Group Nine Media

Group Nine Media is a digital-first media company that boasts nearly 4 billion video views every month.

Job Description

We’re looking for a copy editor to join The Dodo, within Group Nine Media! As a member of the editorial team, you’ll be responsible for proofreading and fact-checking many forms of content — including editorial and commerce articles, midform videos, video scripts, our daily newsletter, social copy and more — and making sure every piece of content aligns with grammar rules and our house style guide. This is a fast-paced role that supports multiple teams across the company. You’ll be based in our New York City office and report to the Editorial Director.

What You'll Do

  • Copyedit all content (including, but not limited to, articles, videos and newsletters) for grammar, house style, and accuracy.
  • Proofread as needed
  • Enforce and update our house style guide, and train new employees on house style
  • Take on various editorial assistant-type duties as needs arise (for example, uploading articles to the CMS).

Success Will Look Like

We’re looking for someone who’s obsessed with punctuation — the type of person who catches every last comma splice and knows their way around an em dash. The successful candidate will be reliable, punctual, self-motivated and accountable. You’ll work quickly and independently, but welcome feedback from a collaborative team environment. You’ll stay positive and can-do even under pressure. You'll also possess impeccable judgment and know when to break a rule and when to adhere to established guidelines. Excellent communication skills are a must.

The right candidate will also be someone who’s extremely adaptable, who understands the ever-changing nature of a start-up, and who’s eager and willing to step in where needed on a small team (including helping out with various editorial tasks).

Must Haves

  • About 2 years of experience copyediting for an established brand or publication
  • An obsessive love for grammar (and a desire to ensure every piece of content is perfect)
  • Mastery of grammar and punctuation rules, and an unparalleled eye for spotting errors in copy
  • Strong knowledge of AP style
  • Reliable and independent self-starter with a positive and team-friendly attitude

Nice to Haves

  • A love of animals.
