About the Role
 
As Marketing Manager at The Athletic, you’ll work cross-functionally and will support the UK team across marketing strategy, delivery and project management to drive product, brand awareness and subscriptions growth.
 
This role operates in a fast paced, scale-up environment and requires an open mind and flexible approach to all tasks big or small. You need to be comfortable with ambiguity and remain inquisitive to solve problems at speed.

Responsibilities

    • Collaborate with HQ-based cross-functional teams as their UK marketing partner and the voice of the UK subscriber. 
    • Work closely with the marketing, partnerships, editorial, SEO and social teams to identify strategic and operational opportunities and challenges across the company.
    • Create and manage project plans for ongoing marketing plans, new tentpole moments and initiatives, along due diligence and partnership implementations.
    • Support and input into the development with the UK Marketing Director on the formulation of a key set of subscriber growth and engagement KPIs
    • Ownership and monitoring of performance against KPI metrics on an ongoing basis, to assess results and make adjustments to campaigns/future plans based on growth and engagement.
    • Management of external communications including integrated advertising, creative messaging, ATL, social and editorial content across owned, earned and bought channels, be that on-site, CRM, social and PR, working closely with specialists in these areas.
    • Support and maximize our brand position, brand identity, brand messaging and brand measurement
    • Delivery of programmes to drive subscriber engagement and retention across the complete subscriber  journey from acquisition to onboarding to advocacy and winback.
    • Initiating and leading internal and external Market brand and audience research to validate the needs of the UK market and optimize the communication and product mix and subscriber engagement plan
    • Support and input into development of subscriber CRM & CEM strategy; establishing objectives and goals to drive subscriber acquisition, conversion, retention and engagement.
    • Develop and support The Athletic UK’s strategy and plans in relation to events, professional associations, industry forums, conferences.
    • Manage relationships with agencies, contractors and other key vendors.

Requirements

    • 5+ years of relevant marketing experience.
    • A demonstrable track record of marketing success and growth in a marketing and business environment.
    • Experience working in highly cross-functional environments.
    • Proficiency developing project plans, research projects implementing marketing campaigns. 
    • The individual in the role will need to be able to act autonomously, think creatively, have business and commercial acumen and demonstrate resourcefulness in achieving results.
    • High level of professionalism; driven and motivated with excellent follow-up.
    • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills (both written and verbal).
    • Creative and strategic thinking skills.
    • An ability to drive action, impact and returns to the business.
    • A “Roll up your sleeves, can-do” attitude and desire to be part of and help build a winning team combined with a genuine enthusiasm and thirst for knowledge.
    • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment with colleagues based in San Francisco and around North America.
    • Experience or knowledge of the Sports, journalism and/or subscription industry is nice to have.
    • Experience with brand response marketing, content curation and distribution, project management, CRM and digital marketing disciplines would be nice to have.
