About Compass

Compass is a real estate technology company with a powerful end-to-end platform that supports the entire buying and selling workflow. We deliver an incomparable experience to both agents and their clients all in service of the Compass mission: to help everyone find their place in the world.

Job Description

Compass is streamlining the home buying and selling experience by building the single software platform for all real estate activities. Founded in 2012, Compass combines the best technology and personalized service to power all real estate activities in 100+ U.S. cities, all in service of our mission to help everyone find their place in the world.

At Compass, we have more than 17,000 of the country’s top real estate agents that work with their clients to help them buy, sell, and rent homes. Compass is a Series G venture-backed company that raised over $1.5 billion in venture funds with more than 2,500 employees.

As an Associate Counsel at Compass, you work on exciting matters that require proactive legal guidance. You're part of a group of talented in-house lawyers and the projects you work on challenge you to think creatively and constructively. You are energetic and collaborative -- ready to partner in initiatives that influence all aspects of Compass’s business and work with employees and agents across the company. Your contributions will be impactful, value driven, and you will play an instrumental role on the Compass Legal Team.

At Compass You Will:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of routine and mission-critical customer contracts (including agent independent contractor agreements and non-disclosure agreements) that support and enable our business operations
  • Interpret contractual terms and identify associated risks to relevant business stakeholders
  • Collaborate with various business teams at Compass (including sales, sales leadership, regional leadership, growth, finance, and product and engineering) -- advising on legal issues, approval processes, Compass policies and procedures, and business strategy
  • Support the continuous improvement of standard form agreements and legal processes (including automation efforts), with an emphasis on efficiency and scalability
  • Participate in the maintenance of various contracts to ensure compliance with Compass policies and risk tolerance

What We Look For:

  • Strong academic credentials including a JD and membership in good standing in at least one state bar (NY bar a plus)
  • 2+ years of top-tier law firm and/or in-house experience with a focus on corporate matters
  • Background in contract drafting and negotiation
  • Confidence operating in a fast-paced environment
  • Detail-oriented with superior organizational skills
  • A creative thinker with strong problem solving skills and the ability to stay calm, work independently, and effectively manage multiple deliverables with time-sensitive deadlines
  • A team player with low ego who can effectively work with other attorneys and colleagues
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and an ability to clearly and simply explain complex ideas

At Compass, our mission is to help everyone find their place in the world. This means we continually celebrate the diverse community different individuals cultivate. As an equal opportunity employer, we stay true to our mission by ensuring that our place can be anyone’s place.
