Job Description

Relativity seeks a highly talented Propulsion Test Engineer to join a rapidly growing space startup. This position will help build the core of our propulsion capability via the development and operation of a world-class test facility for components, engines, and integrated launch vehicle stages at Relativity’s Stennis location. A high degree of autonomy and leadership is required. This role involves working closely with test article Responsible Engineers to establish requirements and goals, then turning those into completed test campaigns. This role includes both test operations and senior level design, analysis, fabrication, and/or modification of fluid and structural test systems.

The Mission/Outcomes and Objectives

Our mission is to change people’s conception of the way rockets are built and flown. As a Senior Propulsion Test Engineer, you will:

  • Design advanced propulsion test stands, including 3D modeling, analysis, fabrication drawings, fluids PIDs, and instrumentation lists.
  • Supervise the fabrication, assembly, and operation of these facilities.
  • Create test sequences, procedures, and data review processes.
  • Lead testing operations under high intensity conditions, with attention to detail.
  • Help develop new propulsion designs based on real test data.
  • Enable rapid test execution through the use of operations best practices and innovative solutions to new test challenges.
  • Mentor and train junior members of the team.
  • Help develop consistent processes and standards across the test and launch teams at all company locations.
  • Potentially travel to various production, test, and launch locations.

Candidate Profile

In order to be successful in this role, you should be someone who thrives in ambiguity and is able to amplify a growing technical and test operations focused team with a track record of success. Ideally, you are someone who has come from a fast paced, aerospace environment, having completed difficult projects while collaborating effectively with other key groups, particularly from a remote site.

Minimum Required Skills and Competencies

  • An undergraduate or graduate degree (BS/MS/PhD) in engineering or related field with demonstrated experience.
  • 5+ years of Propulsion Test design or operations experience involving hazardous, cryogenic, high pressure systems.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and intense startup environment.
  • Experience with 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD).
  • Ability to develop and review complex fluid PIDs.
  • Detailed knowledge of common fluid & structural test components and instrumentation, such as valves, regulators, hydraulic actuators, pressure transducers, thermocouples, flow meters, accelerometers, strain gauges, load cells.
  • Ownership of projects from beginning to end, with minimal oversight.
  • Experience working on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Experience developing processes and procedures.
  • User-level understanding of instrumentation and data/control systems and related components.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Proven judgment in making coupled technical and business decisions.

Preferred Skills and Competencies

  • Ownership of a large scale engine or stage test campaign, leading and training junior team members.
  • Ownership of a propulsion or structural test related project including design, analysis, construction, and commissioning.
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling and drafting including GD&T.
  • Proficiency with FEA and CFD.
  • Experience developing rocket engine injectors, chambers, nozzles, valves, pumps, and other components.
  • Experience leading a diverse team of engineers and technicians.
  • Experience with at least one coding language.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a United States Person as defined by 22 C.F.R.  § 120.15 is required.
