Job Description

An experienced cell and tumour biologist is required to design and conduct scientific experiments to investigate T cell potency and safety as part of preclinical packages to be used for clinical trial applications. The role involves designing and carrying out T cell cytotoxicity and other cell functional assays using a range of culture systems including cell lines, primary tumour and normal tissue models. Extensive experience of a variety of cell functional readouts will be required, preferably with experience of 3D and organotypic models, including the ability to research, setup and optimise complex culture systems. Experience in the processing and culture of primary tumour material and normal tissues would be advantageous. 

• In partnership with the rest of the team, drafting of study plan proposals in line with scientific rationale. Designing and conducting experiments to ensure robust and meaningful data generation.
• Analyse, summarise and record experimental results. Interpret and communicate data to stakeholders.
• Active participation in group and project meetings and discussions, collectively contributing to decision-making and delivery of project objectives.
• Contribute to routine lab and instrument maintenance.


• Undergraduate degree in Life sciences or related discipline and post-graduate experience, preferably including an MSc or PhD in a relevant scientific area, including experience within a biotech or industrial setting.
• Extensive cell culture experience, preferably with 3D and complex models.
• Ability to work independently on routine experiments.
• Ability to learn and develop in order to work independently on more complex experiments within a reasonable time frame.

• Experience working with primary tissues and human T cells.
• Experience of functional cell assays such as ELISA, live cell imaging and cytotoxicity assays.
• Experience working to GCLP, including understanding of HTA requirements and working to validated SOPs


• Diligent, flexible, enthusiastic and focussed individual.
• Strong team player but with the ability to work independently as well.
• Ability to design experiments and studies to address key scientific questions.
• Excellent attention to detail, good time management and communication skills.  
• Ability to follow protocols and work independently after training.
• Knowledge and experience of using standard laboratory equipment (such as pipettes, centrifuges etc).
• Computer literate and ability to familiarise with different IT systems.
• Excellent numeracy and English language skills (both written and verbal).
• Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal).

• Ability to write high quality standard operating procedures, reports, experimental and study plans.
• Advanced experimental design skills (troubleshooting, improvements, next steps)
• Familiarity with more specialist lab equipment eg. fluorescent plate readers, automated microscopy.
• Familiarity and interest in automating data analysis, including the use of programming tools like R.
