Job Description

NGM Biopharmaceuticals, Inc. is a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to discovering and developing the next generation of medicines for the treatment of serious diseases.  Our experienced scientific team has joined forces with an impressive group of industry professionals, Nobel Laureates and other distinguished researchers to build a company where innovation and cutting-edge science has provided the foundation for a robust drug discovery engine that has a track record of generating one new IND candidate per year.  NGM’s current pipeline of clinical-stage programs consists of five drug candidates targeting liver and metabolic diseases, retinal diseases and cancer.  The most advanced drug candidate, aldafermin (NGM282), is in Phase 2b clinical studies in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and is wholly-owned by NGM.  Another drug candidate, NGM621, is in a Phase 2 study in geographic atrophy (GA) secondary to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).  NGM’s strategic collaboration with Merck, with a current term running to March 2022, provides us with the resources and flexibility to pursue our ambitious R&D goals and further extend our pipeline of novel drug candidates. 
NGM is excited to hire a Contracts Manager to join our team. This role is perfect for someone with experience in business contracts management who wants to put their skills to work for an organization committed to treating serious diseases. The ideal candidate will have previous experience working in contracts management for a life sciences or pharmaceutical company.


    • Facilitating the contracts life cycle process within the NGM contracts methodology. This requires an understanding of risk mitigation methodology, risk analysis for contracts review and negotiation, and best practices for business contracts.
    • Contributing to contract negotiations; preparing for discussions based on best solutions and desired outcomes, and determining the minimum requirements for acceptance based on Company’s Standard Operating Procedures (“SOPs”)
    • Drafting template agreements and performing initial redline reviews for various contracts including, but not limited to: Confidentiality, Consulting Services, Master Services, Laboratory Services, and miscellaneous Work Orders and Amendments/Change Orders.
    • Communicate effectively with contract research organizations (“CROs”) and contract manufacturing organizations (“CMOs”) and other vendors to facilitate the provision of services on Company’s behalf
    • Track in-progress agreements and regularly follow up with vendors for status
    • Act as the primary contact between the project team and/or business unit and the external party, ensuring that all legal and contractual matters are addressed efficiently and promptly
    • Respond to complex inquiries regarding contract obligations and revisions
    • Escalate to appropriate teammates in a timely and thoughtful way
    • Communicate effectively with the internal customers, Contracts team, and the larger Legal group to escalate matters as appropriate for expert review
    • Develop strong working relationships with functional groups and project teams
    • Manage a queue of assigned contracts in the electronic contracts management database system
    • Ensure data integrity, and that the data fields and status in the system are updated in real time, based on contract negotiations and status change activity.
    • Assisting on special projects and miscellaneous tasks as assigned


    • 3+ yrs prior experience in the contracts management field (preferably in a pharmaceutical/biotechnology environment performing contracts management duties) 
    • Prior experience with contract template drafting, review, analysis, and negotiation
    • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to collaborate effectively and efficiently with all levels of management and personnel
    • Able to quickly comprehend, prioritize and manage business contracts and other complex documents, with a large volume of contracts in a short time frame
    • Project Management skills, specifically strong organizational and planning skills,  meticulous attention to detail, ability to manage changing priorities and workflow, and the ability to effectively advance multiple simultaneous projects.
    • Able to work independently while exercising initiative, flexibility and good judgment; self-motivating and a self-starter
    • Conscientious hard worker
    • Versatility, flexibility, and enthusiasm is a must
    • Paralegal or Commercial Contracts Management Certification a plus!
