About IonQ

IonQ is developing world-leading general-purpose quantum information processors. Our unique trapped-ion approach combines unmatched physical performance, perfect qubit replication, optical networkability, and highly-optimized algorithms to create a quantum computer that is as scalable as it is powerful, and that will support a broad array of applications across a variety of industries.

Job Description

IonQ is looking for an associate physicist to help further advance our state-of-the-art trapped ion quantum computer. You’ll work closely with experimental physicists and device engineers to work on various theoretical aspects of constructing and operating scalable trapped ion quantum computers. We’re looking for people who are self-motivated, self-directed, and innovative, with a great attitude and work ethic.

Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively to analyze and model all operations on the existing and future trapped ion systems
  • Develop models to understand sources of error in system operations
  • Develop techniques to mitigate errors and hardware imperfections
  • Work with the hardware team to collect and interpret system data

Required skills and education:

  • Bachelors or Master degree in physics or related field
  • Experience with studying quantum systems
  • Experience interpreting experimental data

Desired:

  • Knowledge of trapped ion system architecture
  • Experience in computer programming techniques
  • Experience working closely with experimental physicists
  • Experience creating models and simulations of physical systems

Please include a CV and a cover letter containing a research statement (max. 5 pages). The research statement should include your scientific achievement in the relevant field, well formulated, realistic proposals for short- and medium- term research projects targeted specifically for IonQ’s systems, and your long-term goals and visions for this position.
