Job Purpose

We are looking for an enthusiastic and capable sub-editor to join our busy team. The sub-editor will work on Argus publications, online news stories, consulting documents and marketing material.

The successful candidate must have an unerring eye for accuracy and attention to detail as well as being an excellent wordsmith capable of elevating copy to the high standards of professional expertise that our subscribers require. An inquisitive mind and a desire to develop a knowledge and understanding of how commodity markets work is essential, as is an interest in the wider political and economic news environment.

Argus sub-editors are required to work on copy covering a range of markets and in a variety of formats, moving easily between the quick turnaround required for online news and the longer production cycle of the Argus publications. The ability to work constructively with reporters/analysts to resolve queries in copy is a key part of the job.

Key responsibilities

  • To lay out and sub-edit copy for Argus business intelligence reports (BIRs) and to sub-edit and upload copy to the online news service.
  • To ensure the highest standards of spelling, punctuation, grammar, accuracy and consistency in all published material.
  • To communicate effectively with the BIR and online news editors and with the production department to ensure the smooth running of the production process.
  • To recognise errors in copy and to improve the quality when required.
  • To contribute ideas and support the development and growth of the company.
  • To maintain and promote an efficient work environment in respect of the tools and materials needed for the job and in respect of personal relationships with colleagues.
  • To ensure awareness of and ability to comply with procedures during a business continuity crisis.

Skills and Experience

  • A high degree of understanding with regard to grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • The ability to write in clear and concise English.
  • An understanding of what constitutes a good news story.
  • A good manner when communicating with colleagues.
  • The ability to use desktop publishing software packages and content management systems, or to be able to pick them up quickly.
  • Experience of using Indesign a definite advantage.
  • The ability to work with the minimum of supervision but to also work within a team structure.
