Founded in Tokyo in 2012, SmartNews has quickly become the go-to source of news for millions of users around the world, and a leading news discovery mobile app in Japan and the US. Our mission is bigger than simply aggregating news, and we are working to break through the filter bubble and deliver the world’s quality information to the people who need it.


  • Demonstrate thought leadership to drive revenue growth for SmartNews and develop ad sales strategy
  • Define value proposition of SmartNews Ads
  • Build partnerships with advertisers, agencies and demand-side platforms (DSPs) and identify new advertisers
  • Drive innovation by building relationships and working effectively cross-functionally to help audience development and growth strategies that lead to revenue growth
  • Design new business processes
  • Communicate effectively with senior executives and key stakeholders: build and update overall ad revenue strategy and plans, as well as resulting performance and projections
  • Manage and bring on top talent to help with revenue objectives


  • 8+ years of relevant ads industry experience, with 5+ years in digital ad sales and 3+ years of management experience
  • 3+ years of experience in an internet service company, having worked closely with the product and engineering teams
  • Strong financial, operational, and analytical skills
  • Prior experience taking P&L ownership for the ad sales business, successfully exceeding the top line and managing expenses to plan
  • Proven ability to develop, structure, and execute business strategies, going beyond just tactics to “the vision” - predicting industry trends and allowing the business to stay ahead of the curve as digital media continues to evolve
  • In depth knowledge of and relationships within the digital media publishing and ad tech space and can knock the door of 10+ national brands and 5+ agencies
  • Prior experience leading and growing a digital sales team
  • Love being strategic, but just as importantly, rolling up your sleeves to be hands-on with the day-to-day business
  • International working experience and can enjoy a culturally diverse environment
  • Early stage startup experience, preferred
