Job Description

Novome is building genetically engineered microbial medicines (GEMMs) that perform defined activities in the human gut to treat chronic diseases. We’ve developed the first platform for controlled colonization of the gut with engineered therapeutic bacteria. Our recent $33M Series A funding will bring our lead program in hyperoxaluria into the clinic and expand our platform to additional disease areas.

We are seeking a Controller as we progress Novome to a clinical stage company. Working in close collaboration with the CEO and under the supervision of the Head of Finance and Accounting, the Controller will have a hands-on, detail oriented role in financial accounting and reporting, and will work closely with management, human resources and scientists in the Company. The Controller will be involved in a wide variety of the Company’s operations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of timely and accurate monthly and annual close processes, including accruals for clinical and manufacturing accounting, preparation of journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Review clinical trial protocols and translate information to financial implications; maintain and update clinical accounting policies and procedures
  • Act as point person for external audit and outsourced tax support; draft annual audit financial report as well as complete the disclosure checklist
  • Prepare and provide supporting audit schedules and support
  • Work with outsourced technical accounting team to prepare technical accounting
  • memorandums as needed
  • Assist with identification, documentation, and adherence to the Company's financial
    policies
  • Responsible for general accounting, payroll and accounts payable functions
  • Responsible for the Company’s property tax, use tax, research tax credit study, and general compliance filings
  • Act as a supporting contact for the Company’s insurance requirements and renewals, including D&O, clinical trial, property, general liability, and others
  • Provide support in drafting and reviewing financing documents
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online; experience with NetSuite ERP preferred
  • Experience in leading ERP implementation a plus
  • Experience with financial accounting and reporting for government grants a plus
  • Work with Human Resources in administration matters, including responses to the EDD and review of annual benefits renewals

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Finance required, CPA preferred
  • 10+ years relevant experience
  • Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Life Science industry experience preferred with specific experience in drug manufacturing and clinical trials
  • Blend of public and private company Controller experience preferred
  • IPO and SEC filing experience a plus
  • Preference for working independently and in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment
  • Proven success working well under pressure, highly organized with the ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in an environment with continued process improvement and change
  • Exceptional communication skills that provide the ability to interact with all levels of the organization with a high customer service orientation
  • Strong work ethic and demonstrated ability to independently prioritize workload based on organizational needs/demands; operates with a sense of urgency, when needed
  • Acute attention to detail and accuracy of work performed
